A nice cruise with inconsistent service

Sail Date: July 2013
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

Our overall experience was good ( not great). Getting on the ship was easy. We arrived at the cruise terminal via a carnival shuttle from the airport at around 11 am. Check in was fast and well organized. Our room was ready at around 130.

Food was overall very good. The buffets tended to get crowded, but not very different from the other cruises that we have taken. Sit down breakfast in the Posh dining room was excellent. Fast friendly service with menu choices that were not available on the buffet.

Dinner was an issue. We were a group of 4 adults and requested to be seated at a large table 9 early seating). Its always fun to meet your fellow cruisers. When we arrived at the Chic dining room we were given a table for 4, right next to a serving station. Our waiter was not particularly friendly and service was slow. After dinner we went to the maitre d'and discussed our concerns. We were told that table size requests are not guaranteed. On the issue of the table they More told us that they would try to reassign a table for us and we would be notified of the change. Night 2 we returned to the Chic dining room and were told that we were now in the Posh dining room. ( No notification was ever sent to us.) the table in the Posh dining room was the same- a table for 4, right next to a serving station, slow uninspired service again. We made a second trip to the maitre d', discussed our repeated displeasure. Again we were told that all of the larger tables were filled. we were told that we could always change to anytime dining. Night 3 we went to the Chic dining room and were told that anytime dining was filled and we could not switch. After some discussion ( and simply not taking no for an answer) we were switched to anytime dining. from there on, dinner was fine. Much better service, overall very good food.

Entertainment; the shows in the main lounge were good. very professional. the show band was excellent. The adult comedy shows were very funny.

Ship layout. it was fairly easy to get around. Be aware that the only public area deck that runs front to back is deck 5. A bit inconvenient but not a big deal.

Room. We had an inside cabin with plenty of room and comfortable. The cleaning was also inconsistent. One evening we returned to our room and noted that when the cabin steward did evening turn down, the bathroom counter was not wiped down, the carpet had not been vacuumed, and water glasses were missing. Also the sink did not drain properly. The next day we decided to mention this to a housekeeping supervisor since we did not see our cabin steward- we were on our way off the ship. When we returned the room had been cleaned properly. There was no followup to this from our cabin steward or supervisor until the last day of the cruise.

Ports. Grand Turk. Took at tour of the island. Nice tour, not much to see. The beach at the cruise terminal was very nice, clean, lots of fish. a good beach day.

St Maartin. We went on a sailing excursion on The Random Wind. Outstanding!! One of the best day sails we have ever had.

San Juan. We booked a tour of the rain forrest at the dock. A good trip Less
