HAL Veendam in New England/Canada DONT GO.

What a shocker.Experienced cruisers here found Veendam staff just plain downright unhelpful and surly.Anything was a trouble,whether it was opening a a door whilst carrying trays,or asking for something hotter or even a glass of ice water.

As for the food,it was barely department store cafeteria quality.Overcooked,(especially vegetables),repetitious and spongy.Fries left to go cold and not new ones on offer,grills running out all the time and a long wait for new orders,oily

schnitzels or fish that was tasteless and very fatty roasts.

If you wanted a light grilled hamburger or something from the pool grill at lunchtime,then the wait was huge as only one person was there to take orders,cook,prepare and dispense.Requests for additional persons to helped were frowned upon.

The red and green apples on offer (the mainstay) were ok but occasional pears and even more infrequent red plums were well past use by date.Strawberries had mould as did the occasional blueberry (and I said blueberry!)

The food was basically a huge disappointment and serving/waiting staff did nothing to brighten the day.

No wonder the ship had a poor mark recently by cleanliness and food inspectors.

The ship is tired,and HAL can't even bring themselves to provide a a juice outside of breakfast or an espresso that does not cost extra.Thats a disgrace.

Most passengers were tired of surly staff and poor service after only a day or two.And another issue.Most signs around the ship or cabins referring to use of toilets,litter etc were worded in a most unfriendly manner.No please or thank you.Just DO NOT ....etc.

Small cabins but basically functional but TV/CD was poorly placed for viewing.

OK evening entertainment.

Embarkation was cold.And on disembarkation not a single staff member to say thanks!

HAL is not a premium line in any manner.It is substandard.We were on board for 2 weeks.Never again.
