Booked the 7 nights Saga "Magic of the Fjords" cruise. The Ruby is on its last cruising year but looked fresh and clean. Home pick-up and deposit (shared if more than 75 miles), cuts out so much luggage hassle. Our companions turned out to live 2 roads away!
Registration and embarkation were smoothly executed. We had pre-booked excursions at Stavanger, Flam, Skjolden and Bergen which would be cheaper if bought locally. The weather on all days was fine, warm and sunny, except for Bergen which lived up to its reputation as Norway's rain capital. Our guide tried unsuccessfully to cancel the pointless cable car ride into cloud but was told by the ship's tour manager that it must go ahead - presumably to head off any refund claims. That said, all the tours were well managed, with excellent guides.
Our cabin was a basic but adequate outside twin with bath, shower, TV etc - but reception in the Fjords is patchy to non-existent, although they managed to get the Wimbledon men's final on a large screen in the ballroom. The quality, variety and availability of meals could not be faulted. Staff were at all times friendly, helpful and efficient. Following some previous health problems, precautions were scrupulously observed with no outbreaks of anything other than obesity! As only over 50s cruise with Saga, you can't expect to rush around everywhere, but the overall organisation, entertainment and general attitude of the staff seemed absolutely geared to this type of passenger.
All in all, a great intro to cruising for an old couple used to DIY holidays.
