First, let me say that I NEVER wanted to go on a cruise! The idea of being cooped up on a floating hotel was made me nauseous. Nevertheless, I reluctantly agreed to go and, after doing some research and comparing different cruises on different cruise lines, my wife and I selected a cruise on the Celebrity Equinox, which was the newest ship in Celebrity's fleet.

Since we were going to the Mediterranean and would be visiting such ports as Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes and Naples, we decided on a stateroom with a balcony. The thought of sitting outside, eating breakfast, with a view of the Mediterranean was too good to pass up. As it happened, on the day we actually booked the trip, Celebrity cut the price of its concierge level cabins so that they were the same price as a regular balcony. It seemed like a good deal so we booked a concierge room. We also paid for a Classic Non-alcoholic Beverage package and one that included some alcoholic beverages. My wife likes a glass or two of wine with dinner; I rarely drink anything alcoholic.

We made our own travel arrangements and flew into Rome a day early. Since we arrived at about 7 am Rome time, we had an entire day to spend in Rome. We also booked a hotel in Rome for four days following the cruise. We figured that, as long as we were here, we might as well spend some time in Rome. The first night, we booked a hotel in Trastevere and spent the day wandering around this lovely area across the river from the main areas of Rome.
