Awesome first cruise!

Sail Date: June 2013
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Seattle

We have never cruised before, but had spoken with many people who have, so we felt comfortable boarding the ship. We found our room, with our luggage arriving very quickly afterward. Our room steward, Gede, was the best. He always had a smile every time we saw him. We had been told the rooms are very small, but it was plenty big for us with lots of room in the closet for all of our clothes. Luggage fit under the bed. The bathroom was very clean and the shower head and water pressure was extremely nice! We had an inside room, and I would definitely splurge on at least a window next time.

The Norwegian Jewel offered freestyle dining, and we really liked the flexibility and choices we had, and that we didn't have to dress up to dine. Each restaurant had great choices and very good food. The buffet was always very good, too, with wonderful fresh fruit each day.

They kept the two pools at 86 degrees, so unless it was raining, people were constantly in the pool and/or hot More tubs.

Our stops were Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. These were all quaint fishing towns that were fun to explore. In Juneau we took a 4 mile hike up into the hills, and really enjoyed the plants, flowers and waterfalls. Cruising Tracy Arm fjord and seeing glaciers was amazing! We also saw many whales, both humpback and Orca's, from the ship. There were many seals, dolphins, porpoise, eagles and more to see!

We met many sweet people and enjoyed talking with them, hearing where they're from and about their lives.

The evening shows were fantastic! We appreciated that all of the shows were "clean" and parents didn't have to worry about their kids hearing inappropriate comedy.

This cruise was everything we hoped for and we can't wait to take another one! Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Jewel 8529

Pleasantly surprised. Yes, it was a tight fit getting around the bed to get into it, but otherwise we had enough room. Bed wasn't comfortable; I think the mattress needs to be replaced. Bathroom was great and the shower was really nice! Closet was big enough, plenty of shelf and drawer space. Loved having the safe in the room.

Port and Shore Excursions

Beautiful town. We could see a long waterfall from the ship, so we headed out to find it. We had about a 4 mile hike and it was worth it! So beautiful, relaxing, quiet. We had the place to ourselves. Checked out the town cemetery, I think the oldest stone we found was 1819 or so. (Yeah, we're weird)
We were too early for the salmon run, but heard that this is amazing to see a little later in the summer.

Quaint little fishing town. Too many jewelry shops for our taste. Fun to explore.

White Pass Scenic Railway

Beautiful! This is really a nice excursion if you like to look at scenery. You don't get out at all. Lots of information giving about the history of the area.

Butchart Gardens

These are the most incredible gardens I've ever seen! Absolutely beautiful! We took a taxi into town, then found the city bus and took it ($2.50 apiece) to the gardens, then just paid the entrance fee. This way we got to see the city, which is very beautiful also. Very worth the $30 entrance fee; this place is amazing!
