Legend of the Seas
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
My wife and I love cruising. We are Diamond on Royal Caribbean and really like this cruise line. They seldom disappoint and our cruise May 25, 2013 on The Legend of the Seas was fantastic! We left from Civitavecchia near Rome which was a little inconvenient, but we managed. We took the train from FCO and had no problem, except the elevator in one of the transfer stations did not work so we had to pay a very resourceful young fellow 5 Euro to carry our bags up and down a couple of flights of stairs. But the total trip from FCO to the port was only 11 Euro each way per person and took about 2 hours total time each way. That beats $85 per person each way for the cruise line transportation or 140 Euro each way for a limo. The walk from the train station to the port entrance where the free Royal Caribbean bus is took about 20 minutes and was flat and easy even with two big bags and two carry ons. We arrived around 1 PM at the ship and it only took about 5 minutes to check in. We walked More
right onto the ship, dropped our carry on luggage in our cabin and headed for the lunch buffet on deck 9.
We had an inside cabin on deck 6 and were very pleased with our cabin. The Legend is a smaller ship which was nice for a change from the larger ships with 3000+ passengers. We seldom had difficulty finding a table in the Windjammer - usually outside by the pool. We had a little difficulty the first night at dinner. We had requested a table for two and were assigned a table for 8. But our Diamond Club manager intervened and got us our table for two right in the middle of the dining room - very nice!! Speaking of the Diamond Club - what a nice surprise that was! It was a beautiful room on deck 9 with a great view and we got free drinks every evening from 6-9PM! Also good continental breakfast with great cappucino every morning! The food in the dining room was superb as was the service. The food in the Windjammer was also very good with an excellent selection of wonderful dishes. The entertainment (especially the singers and dancers) was top notch - best we have seen after many cruises. But the best part of the cruise was the ports.
We visited 6 ports (if you count Rome as the first) including Rome, Genoa, Marsailles, Barcelona, Mallorca, and Valencia. All were great fun with the possible exception of Mallorca which is a little dull. We did all ports on our own, except we did use the ship's shuttles when available which cost anywhere from $10 each to $25 each (for boat ride to the town in Marsailles. We had no problem getting around in any of the ports and we are in our 60's. We enjoyed them all very much!!! We had no rough weather the entire trip and the staff on the ship was supurb. The internet is a little slow, but that is a small price to pay - you shouldn't be on the internet anyway!!
Debarkation was a snap. We chose to keep our bags and take them off ourselves on Saturday morning. We left at our leisure around 8:30AM and walked back to the train station. The train going back was very crowded, but we managed to get seats and it was no problem. One thing we did do was stay overnight near FCO the night before the cruise and the night after the cruise which made things easier. Overall we had a terrific time and we highly recommend the Legend of the Seas. Less

Cabin review: M Interior Stateroom
Our cabin was on deck 6 midship. It was very adequate for an inside cabin. Very quiet. Bed was OK. Plenty of closet space and drawer space. Small BR but no real problem.Read All Interior Stateroom (M) Reviews >>
Port and Shore Excursions
We had been to Barcelona before a couple of times so we only had a few things we really wanted to do. We took the ship's shuttle bus to the monument at the end of La Rambla and walked around a bit then went to our favorite restaurant - Les Quince Nits in Placa Real - for lunch. Fantastic paella and nice vino outside on the patio! Primo!! We then took the subway to La Segrada Familia which was amazing despite the long wait and the 20 euro each cost. We have taken the hop on hop off bus in Barcelona before and it is a very good value also if you have the time.
We loved Genoa. On the day we were there (a Sunday) they happened to be having an open house (all free) at every palace and museum in town. That was very fun! We also took the funicular to the top of the mountain and got a great view and a good pint of beer. We used the ship's shuttle bus to and from the ship which was only $10 per person for all day use. Walking in town was easy. Beautiful cathedrals, too. What a beautiful city!
We took a boat ride from the ship to the town - $25 each round trip. We then walked about 1/2 mile to a little train that took us up to the Notre Dame Cathedral overlooking the city (cost was 7 euro each). They dropped us off at the top of the mountain next to the cathedral and then we could spend as much time as we wanted there. Trains left about every 30 minutes to come back. The train ride included commentary all the way up and back - very interesting except it was given in about 6 different languages so you had to wait for your language at each stop. The Notre Dame Cathedral is spectacular and the view is even better!!! Very much worth the trip. Marseille is a beautiful city and very easy to get around in. Very fun!!
This is a pretty boring port. Not a whole lot to see that interested us. We took the city bus from the ship to town (about 3 miles) and then walked around a bit and came back to the ship. This was the only disappointing port.
We had been to Rome before, but we did take the bus to the Vatican to see it again. Very impressive. We stayed at a nice little bed and breakfast near the airport called Casa del Sol. Nothing fancy but quite adequate - 15 euro cab ride to and from the airport.
