“Stop in Progreso, Mexico was Disappointing”

I would not recommend this cruise for couples with young children. Although the cruise advertises that it offers "Camp Carnival" (free childcare), the hours are somewhat more limited than one would expect. However, the greatest disappointment was in the quality of entertainment and on board activities. The pools are very small and crowded. Our six year old was not allowed to use the water slide despite the fact that he is above average size and well experienced on other water slides.

Cabin and dining room services are quite good- all staff are very polite and helpful. Food is mostly good. I had leg of lamb for lunch one day and it was probably the nicest lunch. In the evening, i had sushi which was fresh although some of the other seafood was not so tasty. My wife tried meatloaf which was not good. Beer is $7 each and mixed drinks are about $8-$9. Night time entertainment was disappointing. Although the comic shows we attended were advertised as "Family Friendly" strong More language and adult topics were unfortunately prevalent so we left. Technical difficulties canceled one night's entertainment so we just went back to our cabin. More activities are needed for families with children.

The greatest disappointment was Progreso, Mexico. It is not a desirable location for young children. Street vendors peddling their wares followed us across streets demanding we purchase their native products. It seemed unsafe and the products seemed illegitimate. A woman in a nun costume even heckled us for money for her fictitious orphanage. We quickly boarded the cruise ship along with many other passengers who only briefly stayed ashore. If you can afford the $100 per person excursions, you can avoid some of this peddling as you are whisked away on a bus to your destination. Such excursions were costly for larger families such as ours. We won't return. Less

Cabin steward was very good. He cleaned our room twice a day and was always extremely cordial and helpful.

Port and Shore Excursions

Much better than Progreso, but unless you're really into shopping, there was no public beach to use. Carnival does not want passengers to seek free activities at either ports, so you can't find any. Every merchant is desperate for your U.S. dollar and hounds you to buy from them as you try to casually stroll the town. Very stressful overall. It was our first trip to Mexico and we have no desire to return. The natives should be much less imposing and simply allow visitors to look quietly at their leisure without the sales pressure and heckling.

Eye opening experience to see how the poor native Mexican lives. Too bad the street vendors are so loud, demanding, and obnoxiously bold with following you around to beg you to purchase their wares. Did not feel safe with young children.
