Family took a bus to a beautiful beach with jet-ski-type activities for the teens. They had a wonderful afternoon there without having to take a tour. The senior contingency either went shopping or visited the museum.
Took a mildly interesting tour on our own around the island, but since the ship docked at 2:00, we missed seeing the ancient synagogue as it closed at 4:30, and our tour got us back downtown at 4:50. Thought there would be more of a tour at the distillery, but it was good to see, with plenty of signs which included great historical facts. The rest of the family went to the beach and had a great time.
Read about the Cuevas de las Maravillas, however there wasn't a ship excursion to the site, so we hired two private vans. Glad I had read about using insect repellant as there were definitely a lot of mosquitoes on the beautiful walkway to the entrance of the cave. Entering the cave and seeing the mystically lit formations was a treat for all, however, our guide did a very poor job. Limited English, and limited personality!
Beautiful beach right off the ship. Those who needed to "party" had easy access, and shopping was also readily available. We found that if we walked for a while away from the crowds further down the beach, we could sit and enjoy the beautiful water and watch the activities from a distance without having to listen to the loud music. Lots of options for the teens to be active and have fun. We appreciated the fact that no further transportation expense was necessary.
