We booked our 2nd cruise ever (1st. cruise -Sept. 2012 - Carnival Triumph) on the Golden Princess in April. After a good experience with Carnival, we wanted to see what another cruise line, i.e. Princess, offered for our Alaska trip. Even though we had a Balcony room on the Golden Princess, it was still smaller than our ocean view room on Carnival. The bathroom was smaller, the shower was a lot smaller and the room only had a bed and desk....no sofa or couch. Our cabin steward Joseph was very nice and helpful.
Here's my ratings:
Cabin.................not as nice or large as Carnival
Service..............mostly good, friendly staff
Food..................Dining rooms good, Buffet food was cold & not great quality
Cleanliness........All areas looked clean & well maintained
Shows................Not enough & the performers shows were not great!
Tours...................Book all on the dock to save money, about 30-50% less
We had great weather for our cruise. On-board naturalist Kathy Slamp was very interesting and informative.
OK, for the gripes. Passengers are constantly bombarded with sales spiels for things like diamonds, jewelry, souvenirs, clothes, drinks, tours booked on the ship. It started sounding like the Cruise Director and his assistants were former used car salesman (sorry, car salesmen). The shower in our room was so small that you could not bend over in it. The breakfast items in the buffet areas were cold that should have been hot, eat in the dining rooms whenever possible. There were only 2 Broadway type shows during the 7 days. One was about 15 minutes long and the other about 35 minutes. The performers were not as good or versatile as the Carnival staff.
A magician performed one night but his show only lasted about 20 minutes, guess he ran out of tricks! We went on this cruise to Alaska for the scenery and it did not disappoint.
Alaska is majestic and beautiful!
Would I go back...in a heatbeat!
Would I go on the Golden Princess....no way!
Do not miss this.
Awesome scenery & a great pilot.
Booked on the dock & a lot cheaper than the ship.
Book this on the dock for one way & take a van back to town.
Nice scenery but other train rides have been better (Chama, New Mexico).
Butchart Gardens is a must-see.
Visit the Empress Hotel....very impressive.
