I travelled to Bermuda with my parents, who are in their early 70's. They had been here twice before, and were excited about showing me the island. While the weather on our voyage home was a bit rough thanks to Tropical Storm Andrea, we enjoyed perfect conditions in Bermuda. It's such a clean and pretty place, the brightly coloured houses and the beautiful aqua water were just what I had expected of my visit here.
We had been away from Celebrity for a few years, and had last sailed on the Summit in the mid-'90's, so we were eager to see how the ship had changed following its refurbishment. We found the ship in great condition, with new carpets and furnishings in the public rooms making a big difference.
Our cabin was ideally located--mid-ship on deck 7. The cabin was in fine shape, and I was surprised by how spacious the balcony was. Our cabin steward Jose was very friendly and really went above the call--even making towel animals for us. In fact, the staff throughout the ship to a person was warm and welcoming.
We were all very impressed by the quality of the entertainment. The main group of singers and dancers had just begun their run on the ship, and their enthusiasm really came through. We especially enjoyed the addition of the 54 Below program. This is a perfect fit for cruises leaving from the North-East, as many people in the audience who stayed for the Q & A session following the performance really knew their theatre. I was also very happy to see the main stage band play in the more intimate setting of the Revelations lounge, along with a number of performers from around the ship. This is a great idea, and really underlines the more contemporary approach that Celebrity seems to be taking in terms of music--well done!
It was wonderful to see the Captain, Officers and senior staff being so visible around the ship. This goes a long way towards making people feel welcome. We had a great time at the Dancing with the Stripes event.
As far as food is concerned, we were always able to find something we liked in the MDR for dinner. We did feel however, that some of the side dishes were a bit lacking in imagination. We had a great experience at Bistro on 5, a delicious and affordable alternative to the often crowded lunch buffet. Our experience at the Normandie restaurant was a bit mixed. While the food was fine, we found the service a bit rushed and lacking some of the luster we had remembered from previous visits here. We understand that Celebrity is trying to make service in its specialty restaurants more "accessible", but we just didn't have the sense of being in a 5 star restaurant that we had enjoyed in the past.
We made our own arrangements to get to Horseshoe Bay beach and to tour St. George's and Hamilton as my parents are so familiar with the island and the public transport is an absolute dream here.
The special events and cocktail hour offered to Elite passengers were very much appreciated. Our Elite hostess Ti-Ann went out of her way to create a friendly environment, very attentive and professional.
Overall, it was an amazing trip, and we are so happy to find the Summit both familiar and updated. We have definitely come "home" to Celebrity!
