Trip of a life time

Sail Date: May 2013
Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean
Embarkation: Venice

Departing port of Venice was convenient and well organised by Carnival. We stayed 2 nights in Venice prior to embarking on the cruise which gave us time to explore this amazing port at our leisure. The Carnival Legend is a floating Las Vegas hotel. The buffet was good and similar to what we have had in Las Vegas. Plenty of food good variety. The main dinning was good quality and the waiters were very friendly and attentive. All crew on board were friendly and fun. We chose this cruise because of the ports of call and as first time visitors to Europe and first time cruisers loved the stress free way to see all wonderful ports we visited. We did a lot of research before we left and it really pays to read reviews etc before booking excursions. To reduce stress we booked excursions for places that were not close to the port. The 3 excursions we booked thru Carnival were great and well organised. We are quite independent travellers so only took the unguided excursions. Our guide on the bus More to Pompeii was fun and she shared lots of local information with us. We took the private train to Rome and although this was expensive it really made our trip to Rome even more special. My advice with Rome is to accept you are not going to be able to see Rome in a day. We took the Hop on Hop off bus which gave us a good overview of the city. We lined up to get into St Peters. Note bags are checked and put thru X-ray before being permitted into St Peters but they are fast and we had no problems. Also ensure you are wearing appropriate clothing must have knees and shoulders covered or you will not be permitted into the church.

We were concerned about Athens after being warned that transport can be un reliable. We chose to take the Hop on Hop off bus from the port and it was fine. Drops you off at Plaka and you can walk to the acropolis from there. The buses leave regularly and we felt safe and had no issues. However there are plenty of cabs waiting at the port. Try and find people to share with to reduce costs.

Izmir turkey. We chose to wander around the Bazaar. If you have never been to a bazaar before this could be daunting. We loved it, try the fresh Turkish delight amazing. Sellers are trying to get you to buy their goods but we found that with a firm no they were fine. Remember they are trying to make a living.

The ship was fine and we had no problems on board. My husband is not a good sailor and gets terrible sea sickness however it was very calm around the Med. our doctor gave my husband some anti nausea medication and we would recommend this as any medication on board is expensive and they have limited supplies of things like cough/cold mediation. There was plenty of things to do on board if you chose to with shows every night, pools mini golf etc. most nights we were just happy to relax after full days in port.

We would defiantly consider cruising again and depending on the ports we wanted to visit would have no issues choosing Carnival again. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Legend Balcony Main 4229

Cabin 4229, great position, loved all the storage areas. Bigger then we thought it would be. Lovely to have the balcony. Very quiet. Bathroom small but had everything we needed.

Port and Shore Excursions

Took the hop on hop off bus. Athens itself run down and tired but the tourist areas clean. A must to see the acropolis and Parthenon. Lots of dogs lazing in the sun theybare looked after by the city they are friendly and don't seem to be bothered by all the tourists.

Disembarked at Barcelona. Stayed one night. Took the hop on hop off bus to see the city and Gaudi,s church. Walked up and down las rambler's soaking up the atmosphere. Everyone warned us of the pick pockets so we were very wary and mindful however we did not have any problems and felt very safe and comfortable. Took a cab from the port to the hotel. Lots of great places to eat and shop. Try the sangria it is very good. Great open food market selling fresh fruits etc.

Quaint old city, with lots of history. We took the cable car up the mountain amazing views of the walled city. Nice day walking around the old city. We took a cab back to the port set price of 10 euros. Good value.

We walked from the port to the Barzaar. Nice flat walk around the water front. However cabs are waiting at the port and are not expensive. The Barzaar is busy Nd large. The sellers are trying to get you to buy their goods. Lots of clothes, carpets knock off goods. They sell fresh Turkish delight by the kilo and it is very good. People are friendly and we enjoyed our day there.

Transport to the city centre from the port provided by the city at a few eros each way. Buses left every 10 minutes the who,e day. A nice city to wander around at your leisure. Found the most amazing old fashion candy shop. Great to take home as gifts.

Loved Venice. My husband called it the city of elegant decay. Yes it is crowded but we had no problems. Everyone we came in contact with was friendly. Best pizza in Italy.
