Adriatic and Eastern Med cruise

Sail Date: May 2013
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Venice

We are only second time cruisers, the first being last summer on the Celebrity Eclipse. We loved it so much that it seemed obvious to choose the same cruise line again. So we decided on an Adriatic cruise on the Celebrity Silhouette.

We flew into Venice, and despite a couple of rainy days, thought the selected ports of call were excellent.

The cabin was comfortable, excellent bed and enough storage.

We opted for "anytime " dining, usually 7.30, but that is a popular time, so sometimes there was a short wait.

We felt that the food in the main dining room in the evening was not quite up to the standard on the Eclipse, but excellent nevertheless. Desserts were a bit hit and miss. Waiting staff were brilliant! Thank you Putra!!

We had breakfast and lunch in the cafe on deck 14. There was a huge array of different breakfast dishes, and if you wanted something that was not on display, the staff were willing to find it for you.

We are More not huge eaters, and lunch when we were on the ship was salad. Again, a huge choice, and staff helpful regarding finding anything not immediately on display.

We were disappointed that the evening shows were at different times. Eating at 7.30 meant you missed both the 7pm and the 9pm show. On the Eclipse all the shows were at 7pm and 10.30pm, which meant that all diners had an option to see one or the other.

The guest entertainers were excellent, Katy Setterfield and Tommy Bond especially, but we were not impressed with the ships in house entertainers although they worked hard and with enthusiasm.

Two things though cast a shadow over our overall impression of the holiday.

We went on only one ships excursion, to Taormina in Sicily. It was not satisfactory, due to a poor guide. We went to the shore excursions desk and told the staff member what had happened and she said she would speak to her supervisor and get back to us. No one has as yet, and trying to find a complaints procedure on the Celebrity website is impossible!
Secondly we had a poor experience on the day of disembarkation. We were told to leave the ship at 9.30am, and taken by coach to Rome airport, where we arrived at 10.30am for a 19.10 flight home!

We were not allowed to check in our luggage until 17.00, which meant seven hours carting 4 cases around an airport clogged up with other cruise passengers in the same situation. The airport was in chaos, and the experience left a nasty taste. We thought it not beyond the realms of possibility for Celebrity to have allowed us to stay on the ship until after lunch. It was not helped by the fact that our flight was delayed....not their fault I know, but the frustration was exacerbated by that.

Cabin review: Celebrity Silhouette Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Veranda Continental Deck (6) 6177

State room ticked all the boxes. The bed was extremely comfortable, and the linen and towels were frequently changed. Cabin attendant was pleasant and helpful, but did need to be asked for some replacement toiletries, and we never did get any shower gel! We weren't sure it was available anywhere until the last day, when I asked Guest Relations. Bathroom was well appointed and had enough storage for my lotions and potions!!Although we were told on booking that the view would be obstructed , it was not really noticeable and did not spoil our enjoyment of the balcony although photographic opportunities were limited. We appreciated the turn down service, it was nice to finish the day with a chocolate!
