I had always resisted the thought of cruising, but after doing the cruise with Holland America on the MS Oosterdam it would be my first option or a cruise/fly holiday.
The ship was spotless, the emphasis is on hygiene for the protection of the passengers, with anti bacterial hand wash stations around the ship as well as at the entrance to the dining areas no self respecting germ would survive in that environment:)
I found all the staff pleasant and very helpful, always willing to meet our needs with a smile.
We ate all our meals in the Lido restaurant, and found the food to be good quality and plentiful with lots of variety on the menu.
We found the on shore excursions offered by HAL were expensive and not value for money, at every port there were tour operators offering better value options, the only draw back was IF the independent operator was late returning you to the ship there was no guarantee the ship would wait unlike a HAL excursion almost a scare tactic to book with HAL, we took our chances and all was fine.
Being first time cruisers we were not sure what to expect with the entertainment but at best I would say it was amateurish almost like high school review productions.
In conclusion you can do as little or as much as you like on a cruise ship, walk laps or veg out around the pool with a good book, enjoy chatting with other passengers or keep to yourself a cruise is what YOU make it.
