Carnival Fantasy exceeded our expections by a mile

Sail Date: April 2013
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: Charleston

This was our first cruise in five years. We were returning to the Fantasy, which we had sailed on 15 years ago when our kids were in elementary school. We chose the Fantasy this time because it sails out of Charleston and we live a 100 miles up the road in Columbia, SC.

This time it was just the two of us for 7 nights. We were very impressed. The crew was exceptional, totally above and beyond anything we expected. The captain steered us through some rough seas out of Charleston. He did a very good job in winds gusting to 72 knots. Smooth sailing after that. The ship was spotless. Our favorite activities were the trivia contests and miniature golf. In the evening we liked the Piano Bar. We chose to eat primarily in the dining room. The food there was exceptional. We even had the same waiter as we did 15 years ago when we cruised with the kids.

The ports of call were so-so. Nassau, Half Moon Cay, and Grand Turk. We weren't focused on them anyway, so no big loss. More We didn't do any excursions, but just walked around near the pier. The best was Nassau because it's bigger. The least-best was Half Moon Cay because of all the intense sun that we were trying to avoid. If Carnival had pushed the the return to ship deadline maybe two hours later, especially at Half Moon, that would have been nice, because we could have walked on the beach in the late afternoon/early evening and minimized the sun exposure.

Overall - an excellent trip. Would do it again, although maybe try a bigger ship next time for a change of pace. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Fantasy R100

R100. Excellent room. Quiet. Near enough to mid-ship so that motion was very minimal. The bathroom and closet space were ample and the bed excellent. The thermostat system may have been hard for a small, elderly, or handicapped person to adjust. Nice view of the ocean. The room service was excellent.

Port and Shore Excursions

As with Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk would have been nicer if the ship had stayed a little longer in port, into the late afternoon or early evening, so that we could have walked on the beach without getting too much sun exposure. It was, however, a nice beach and very accessible. The facilities onshore looked like they were owned by Carnival, so not really too interesting. I supposed that if we had taken an excursion, we might have seen more of the island.

Would have enjoyed it much more if the ship had stayed a little longer into the late afternoon or evening. As it was, it's a very sun-drenched location, and we were trying to avoid getting burned. Also, unlike the other two ports, where there is a pier, at Half Moon you have to get on a launch, which my wife doesn't care for. There was, however, a nice grass-hut bar on the beach.

Walked around downtown for a few hours. Had a nice time. In retrospect, taking an excursion might have been a good idea since Nassau has a fair amount to see.
