Celebrity to Alaska

Sail Date: May 2013
Destination: Alaska
Embarkation: Seattle

As a veteran of over 60+ cruises and a fan of the cruising experience and service of days gone by I think Celebrity does the best job of any major mass market line.

Having said the above I am disappointed by the Solstice (currently on the cruise in Skagway).

Embarkation in Seattle was smooth and an absolute breeze. Cabins were ready around 2PM.

Food has been fantastic throughout and no complaints about quality.

Entertainment is the most pathetic and poor throughout that I have ever seen.

Staff is clearly unhappy (outside of dining room and room stewards) and unfriendly and frankly it does not cost Celebrity more to have their staff be friendly and smile. Many staff members are downright rude and Celebrity should be ashamed. For example, at Cafe Bacio (the local Starbucks type place on board) the staff is actually clearly angry and takes it out on guests.

Fellow passengers are surprisingly young. Average age is probably in the More 50's.

Very few children on board likely due to not being Summer vacation yet.

Shore excursions have been fabulous and VERY well executed.

The ship looks great for a five year old ship that has not had a major refurbishment. We were on the maiden voyage five years ago.

Perhaps the most disappointing to me was arriving in my stateroom that was not ready until 2pm because "it was being sanitized" to find dirty sheets, a filthy bed skirt that looked like somebody puked on, forehead grease stains on the glass doors, and a stained mattress pad. Also all touchable surfaces had fingerprints. Clearly the "sanitizing" is a joke and cabins are not cleaned properly. Our room steward apologized and took away our dirty items and said he would correct the item by the next day. My wife said this was not acceptable and he took care of it by the evening.

Also disappointing to me, and the three other couples we are traveling with, is the degradation of society as evidenced by fellow passengers. A trip to the Ocean View Cafe ("Lido Cafe') is an absolute appetitesuppressant. The Ocean View is like a "Hometown Buffet" with an environment that is a disgusting free for all with rude fellow passengerss scrambling for their large plates of food to feed their morbidly obese bodies. It really is a disgusting experience and is a disconnect from the rest of the otherwise elegant Celebrity experience. Food quality and variety is excellent in the Ocean View Cafe.

Overall I will cruise on Celebrity again in the right circumstance. What I mean by that is that Celebrity ships lend themselves to a nice traveling hotel for destination cruises probably a step above Hilton or Hyatt. However, as a tropical destination (i.e. Caribbean cruise) Celebrityy provides limited deck options with one main pool area that is always contaminated with loud and obnoxious music and around noon an overly loud cruise director who wants to destroy your restful moment with their loud voice and pool activities. There is no aft pool (like HAL and Princes) to retreat to that is free of noise pollution and restful. Less
