Explorer of the Seas getting old but still a great ship

Sail Date: May 2013
Destination: Bermuda
Embarkation: Other

A review of the Explorer of the Seas R/T Cape Liberty Bermuda -- Caribbean sailing on May 16, 2012.

Embarkation: Very smooth: Arrived at 11:10 AM and were in the Windjammer having lunch at 11:55 AM

Our room was ready at 1:15 PM and everything was in order. Our room attendant handled every special request without a problem throughout the cruise. She was excellent!

Now let us talk about the ship -- We all know that the life of this ship is limited awaiting a complete refurbishment of this grand vessel in late 2014. However, let us recognize that, as paying customers, we should expect the high quality consistent with the RCI cruise line. It was disappointing to see so many little things in disrepair. This included the little things like all those elevator arrows not working to the rusted exterior parts. RCI appears to have forgotten what made them great.

Fortunately, the entire staff from Captain to the lowest level has hot forgotten. They were super in More every respect. Service and quality of the meals was exceptional. Good job -- EoS.

As of now, I am scheduled to take a voyage on this ship on January 31. 2014. I am very concerned and may cancel unless I can get some assurance from RCI that they will not allow this ship to continue to deteriorate.

Now, back to my experience on this May 16, 2013 trip:

Our cabin was neat and well appointed. The attendant was invisible expect to the fact that she addressed every one of our needs in a very efficient manner. An extra tip was given to her as with many others.

The entertainment was very good at the shows and throughout the ship.

The host in the Concierge Lounge and his staff were exceptional. This is the one perk afforded to Diamond Plus that will keep me an RCI patron.

We did not take advantage to all the special offers presented to us Diamond Plus cruisers because we found too many alternatives to enjoy, Good job -- RCI!

Overall the meals and service in the Windjammer were good to superior. However, the lunch and breakfast meals and service in the dining room were lacking a bit. The main meal in the dinning room presented a good varity and almost 100%. The waiter, Antonio, and his assistant were simply outstanding

Debarkation went very smoothly. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Bermudas offers three ports -- Hamilton, Naval Dock Yards, and Kings Wharf. Kings Wharf is the least desirable. There very to see and do there. And the best beaches are far away,.

Everything you could ask for is here. I really enjoy every visit to this "vacation" location.

I love this port. So much to do in Philpsburg - beaches, shoping, and having fun. Also, there are some great water activities and visiting the French side as a great sightseeing venue. But, getting there at 1:00 PM is not very desirable. It is just too hot.
