Fabulous Holland America

Sail Date: May 2013
Destination: Baltic & Northern Europe
Embarkation: Other

We sailed on the Ryndam on May 7th from Dover for 2 7 night back to back cruises to different parts of the Norway fjords.
Not sure why previous guests weren't totally impressed with the May Norweigan fjords cruise...I can recant most of what they criticised.
All meals were well organised and food changed daily..an extremely high standard. we chose freestyle dining, and the early sitting. Going around 6.30-7.00 there was never a queue, enjoyed meeting new people everytime, sharing tables of 4 and 6. Made many lovely friends on the cruise that we will keep in touch with.
The Ryndam was spotless and healthy. They have a wonderful system of not allowing guests to help themselves to food in the first 48 hrs, preferring to serve you completely, thus reducing risks of any infection spreading that someone might have come on board with. Chatting the ship's dr. he said few ships do this, and he noticed a great reduction on onboard illnesses as a result...so well done Ryndam!
We More noticed that all the crew were exceptionally friendly, at ease and helpful...this has not always been the case with other cruises. It made for a very enjoyable cruise with the crew who often laughed and chatted with us.
Ports of call were great on the first leg..Bergen, Flam railway a must.etc..but the second leg that visited Oslo, were more cities. The only lovely countryside was at Ulvik where once again we saw the snow capped mountains and small village life. The first cruise had more snowcapped mtns and villages.
The major dissatisfaction for us and everyone we spoke with was the cost of the tours and ship excursions. These were marked way up and we mostly organised our own tours onshore for half the cost. This is regrettable and ship ended up cancelling some tours because of lack of numbers.
Entertainment at night was welcome, but probably not the super standard we have seen on other ships. Pleasant but not exciting.
Piano man Lee in the Mix bar was extremely popular and we visited him every night, enjoying his name the tunes nights and sing-alongs.
Cabins were very spacious, well laid out. Ensuite has a bath as well as shower, unusual for ships. Bed so comfy and of course cabin stewards always attentive.
we would travel on Holland America again after this cruise..being a smaller ship with only 1200 people, it wasn't crowded and we met friends easily around the ship.
Perfect way to relax on a beautiful ship. Less

Cabin review: Ryndam Large Oceanview Stateroom Main 820

Cabin 820m was fantastic. Great location..quiet, near the lift, so easy to reach other decks. No one trampling around promenade decks or scraping chairs above as others had on other decks.
