My first cruise was on the Breakaway
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)
Quick review. Let's get to the essentials
Went well. Processed rapidly but arrive as early as you can.
No announcements made when leaving or arriving port, found this kind of Boring... would have been nice if Captain said "we're now leaving... or now arrived..." It was a missing touch.
Loved them all. The complimentary restaurants provided great menu.
MANHATTAN ROOM: More senior citizens tend to go here. But beautiful room. Dress code in effect for this room.
SAVOR/TASTE: It's the same menu just different decor
GARDEN CAFE: Different class of people I would say, people eating as if ship was running out of food.. you will need all your patience. Great deserts, selection of food, amazing views. Breakfast, luch and snacks. Be sure to go around all the stations (long walk) as the options differ. Restaurant is located on deck 15 - When the ship rocks, you feel it.
Garden Cafe has More self serve soft ice cream machines. Nice touch.
OUTDOOR GRILL deck 16: Same menu all the time, meat ball sandwiches and fries. Only went once.
CAGNEYS STEAKHOUSE (Cover Charge): Great steakhouse. You will love it. Great atmosphere.
LA CUCINA (Cover charge) Loved the decor and food as great. Try the chicken parm with pasta.
MODERNO CHURRASCARIA: Share the same venue as Cagney's but the view at the back of the ship is amazing. Great decor. This restaurant features a salad bar /soup. Food did not stop coming, Too much meat, but that's what a Churrascaria is and you're on vacation ! Just skip lunch if you plan on eating here.
LE BISTRO: Nice ambiance. If you want to enjoy privacy, don't eat outisde the restaurants as you will be in the middle of the atrium will 3 floors staring at you.
TEPPAKYAKI: Excellent presentation by the chefs. Loved this place.
SHANGHAI NOODLE BAR: Great food. Reasonable prices. A la carte restaurant.
Try to sit at the noodle bar area so you can watch the incredible chefs work their magic.
O'SHEEHAN'S. Great pub style atmosphere. The fish and chips are heavy on the oil but taske good. Wings are great also. Great selection of international beers. Great atmosphere.
STATEROOMS: I stayed on Deck 5 - Ocean view cabin. Very spacious, lots of storage room. 2x 110volts and 2 x 220volts plugs.
Although in the elevator AFT section, there is a smell of garbage coming from the decks below. Smell was stong enough to notice. Had to block my nose.
SPA SECTION DECK 16: Warning ! The spa staff push products on you after you're done with a shave or facial or massage for example. Very pushy... I was offered a cream and face wash... in my head I though ok.. it's probably 50$ tops... bill came out to 135$... they don't even show you the prices before hand.
GYM: The gym is very busy in the morning but if you wait 5-10 min you will find a treadmill. Excellent view of the ocean.
POOL: Small pools for this size ship.
HOT TUB: Always full, you also have to keep pressing down on the button to get the jets working, the jets only work for 4 minutes tops, very annoying.
FIREWORKS: Nice firework display on the friday night combined with an 80's theme party. Get to SPICE H20 by 9:30 pm to get a seat and bring warm clothing.
MUSIC ON SHIP: Nice music, but does the Jackson family have shares in NCL? Seriously. Lots of MJ playing.
ATTRIUM: Senior Citizens over 70 years old rejoyce ! Enough said.
CARLO'S BAKE SHOP: Great lobster tails and cupcakes.
ROCK OF AGES: Was cancelled twice on me due to technical glitches, had to reschedule, threw off diner reservations, had to rush to guest services to reserve. Show itself if very true to the Broadway production. Very suggestive show - do not bring kids or yourself if you're easily offended.
CIRQUE DREAMS JUNGLE FANTASY: Simply amazing. This should be the show that headlines for the ship as opposed to rock of ages.
BURN THE FLOOR: Excellent.
I did not do any of the Comedy, FAT CATS, cigar lounges or BARS.
Did not have a chance to enjoy outdoor dining on the waterfront as it's cold and windy during transit. Perhaps better option in port.
Photographers: If you ever want to experience what the Papparazzi is, well here is your chance. They are everywhere. Pictures range from 20$ to 12,95$ per photo. Although the Breakaway has an excellent photo studio area and a well organized photo binder.. make sure you get your pictures by friday or else you will face very long line ups on saturday.
I spent 150$ on pictures. Very pricy.
DUTY FREE - Excellent seletion of spirits, you can only have access to what you purchased after 5 pm saturday. NCL packages them for you in a nice box for easy transport.
LIMO SERVICE @ PIER 88
Although out of NCL control. Meeting a driver was a disaster as the port officials send you across the street on meet your limo driver. This needs to improve as with all the congestion you have to fight to find your driver and make sure no one else takes your car.
DISEMBARKATION IN NYC
Was with a color system. Ranges from 8:15 am to 10:30 am. If you have a flight to catch or if you have someone picking you up, leave as early as possible as the border lines are long in the terminal. Can take you 1 hour to exit.
In Bermuda: No problems.
Excellent service. Beyond my expectations.
COMMUNICATION SHIP WIDE
The freestyle daily is important if you want to know everything that's going on.
The TV communication system in the stateroom needs to be improved.
Don't wait for the Captain to say much on the PA system.
Cruise Director Julie is simply fantastic !
The ship itself if spectacular. You really get a chance to appreciate her grandeur when you disembark in Bermuna. Stunning. Love the ship. HUGE! HUGE!
Pictures don't do it justice. Less
