A Very Nice Getaway

Sail Date: April 2013
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

We drove in from Orlando the morning of the cruise. Used an internet parking coupon from Park n Go and we were at the terminal at noon. Had a bit of a delay getting on as the post-sequestration US Customs folks were slow getting everyone off the ship from the week before. Would strongly suggested using the "walk off" provision for disembarkation.
In our room on the Riviera Deck by 1:00 pm. Back of the ship on this deck provides easy access to the adult pool, easy access to the Horizon dining, and no noise from above. Room was clean and our cabin steward, Jorge, was just outstanding.
We had been on the Caribbean Princess in 2006, when it was newer, and were prepared for a fair amount of wear and tear on the ship. It was, however, in good shape.
We ate in the Island Room each night (2 of us by ourselves). We were in the mood to just hang out together after a hectic 3 months. We were seated each night in 10-20 mins. It was just enough time to grab a drink at the More Piazzo Bar while we waited. Like many Princess regulars, we had noticed the overall quality of the Princess food deteriorate over the past several years. But this was not the case on this trip for us. Each night there was plenty to choose from and all our choices turned out to be pretty good. It was good enough that we did not consider our usual night or two in the specialty restaurants. We did the buffet for breakfast and lunch and, again, the overall food quality and selection seemed very good. It appeared that Princess was making an effort to improve on all things related to food. And, of course, the pizza was wonderful.
There were the usual deck chair hogs and the cruise ships have given up trying to solve this one, but despite the great weather and a younger Spring Break crowd, we always found good places to read on deck (in the sun or out of the sun). The adult pool in back of the ship is a great place, although the Kid Place is a little too close.......but it was not the end of the world.
My wife is an entertainer, so she tends to be the entertainment critic. We both thought that the theatre entertainment each night was above average. As for the Movies Under the Stars, a little more variety might help.
Disembarkation was a snap. We were off quickly "walk off" and in our car headed home by 7:30 am.
It was a great week away from the world. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

We grabbed a cab and went to Eagle Beach. Not a great beach. Head further North toward Palm Beach. Use the $2 public vans or buses. They are safe and cheap.

We hiked around town, explored the main city and grabbed a drink at a nice restaurant on the water.

Always a great experience. Get off the ship early and head as far left as you can go to avoid the crowds and have a lot of choices around chairs with and without shade. It is a great relaxing day.
