We flew into Miami Saturday and enjoyed the evening in our hotel. We boarded the Sun around noon and went straight to our room. We had champagne and the cheese plated delivered. We had a midship balcony suite and loved it. We sat in our room with a view of the port and enjoyed a nice treat to ourselves.
The ship was smaller, which we knew, but that wasn't a big deal to us. The staff was very good and very helpful. Arnell was our housekeeper and did a great job.
The room was large and comfortable. We loved having the extra space in the room with the sofa. There was a lot of storage in the room (comparing to the Dawn stateroom with a window). The balcony was something we will always have from now on. It was nice to sit on our own balcony any time we wanted. We read books, sunned, enjoyed the beauty, and of course, had cocktails there. I loved sitting there as we departed from the various ports.
One great piece of advice I read on a different review, take a battery powered votive candle for the bathroom. At night, when it's dark, that bright light in the bathroom is blinding. We turned on the candle when we went to bed and it was a nice enough night light to help us find our way in the bathroom and not fear going from complete bright lights to darkness when going back to bed.
Another helpful item we got from another article, we took a four prong outlet. We used it to keep our Kindles and iPads charged. We did not bother with the Internet on any island, but we had games we enjoyed playing so we had a way to keep all our stuff charged. Plus, we could charge both our cell phones on the last night so they would be at full power when we got back to Miami.
The food was okay, not great, but good enough for us. We do think overall, it could be a lot better. We think NCL could up its game in the buffet. Too much stuff cooked with curry every night. The salad dressings for the most part were awful. We ate in the Seven Seas once and the Four Seasons three times and liked all of our choices. The desserts in the nicer restaurants were good, but like the Dawn, the desserts in the buffet sucked. Some of it was like eating rubber.
The entertainment was good. We liked all the shows we attended except for the ventriloquist on the last night. He was not funny or good. The group that did the Beatles and Beach Boys were good. The ladies who performed on their night were very good. We enjoyed the cast signing programs. The comedian we had on one of the first nights was really good and very funny. We also enjoyed the NCL talent show.
We spoiled ourselves with a 3 massage package for each of us. It was well worth it. We also did a lot of shopping in St. Thomas, probably too much but we got some great deals.
We don't do the excursions as they tend to be overpriced and not always things we would enjoy. We took a few tours of the islands. We loved Dominica. What an incredibly beautiful island and the hike to Trafalgar Falls was not too difficult and well worth it.
We unplugged from the world for 10 days and it was worth it. We believe you get out a vacation whatever you put into it and expect from it. This was our second cruise to the Caribbean so we'll most likely go elsewhere on the next one. We will also pick a newer, bigger ship. The small ones get rocked too much, and no matter how much they get refurbished, they still have a tired feel to them.
Overall, we had a great time. Enjoyed our time on the Sun and if you have the opportunity to do this 10 day cruise to the Caribbean, go for it.
