First of all we fully agree with the review 02/24/2013 " Caters to senior citizens " and the review 03/2013 " Disappointing from embarkation to disembarkation " and we experienced the same exact disappointment and frustration.
Indeed, Princess should advertise this voyage as a Senior Cruise if they don't want to add activities for all age groups. It would save active people looking for fun and entertainment all the frustration and ... money ! Average age was in the 70's.
Old ship ... Time for an update and a deep cleaning !
Poor choice of food and always the same taste ( breakfast and buffet ).
Library not inviting = inadequate.
Entertainment was very disappointing and unprofessional except the World Champion Pianist Ryan Ahern.
Small rooms - Our balcony room on Royal Caribbean was bigger with a nice sofa to relax, a desk and chair. On Golden Princess, the balcony room had only a desk, a chair and an armchair, NO sofa. Moreover, we had a constant urine odor in the bathroom.
Departure from the Marriott in LA organized by Princess ( we bought the transfers ) was chaotic ... not enough buses ... long wait.
Disembarkation in LA was chaotic ... long waiting lines.
We are Diamond Members with Royal Caribbean but we picked Princess because of the itinerary ( despite our friend's recommendation who had a very bad experience with Coral Princess - Panama Canal, last November ).
It's the first time in our cruise history that we got bored on board.
The 3rd day of our cruise I started coughing, sneezing and not feeling well. I went to the medical center and the nursing staff recommended over the counter medication I could buy in the store on board. It didn't help and I had to go back to the medical center. Meanwhile my husband started with the same symptoms. The nursing staff sold me medications far too strong and I started feeling dizzy with breathing difficulties. We went back and the doctor assistant gave us the appropriate medication. He has been very helpful and cooperative.
A crew member told us : " You will feel quickly better as soon as you get back home because the germs are spread around the ship " !!! We still had one week to go ...
We met many sick people on board, some had been in quarantine and some still were ( we met their spouses on the tenders to go to Maui ).
And it's true ... as soon as we got home we felt much better and the breathing discomfort disappeared.
But we want to thank the staff in the dining room and Horizon Buffet for their kindness and for always doing their best to make us fee comfortable.
If you happen to directly call Princess Cruises, the first thing you will hear is :
" Relax, rejuvenate and escape completely with Princess Cruises "
We actually did relax and rejuvenate when we escaped the ship to enjoy the beautiful islands of Hawaii !
Most definitely, we will never cruise with Princess again.
