Liberty Cruise Western Caribbean Comments
Destination: Western Caribbean
March 23 departure on board Liberty to western Caribbean. Scheduled stops at Cozumel, Belize, Roatan and Grand Cayman. During a spring break week.
Flew in Friday, rented car from FLL to Doral Marriott. Did you know the hotel is directly underneath the inbound flights to MIA? Wow, what a view. You can almost see the captain's face. Inside they only sounded like semis passing by. Our rooms were on the second floor or friends on the top floor. We slept fine, their room slightly lounder.
Returned rental car to MIA car rental building. From their the four of us hopped on a free Thrifty shuttle to the Port. About a 20 minute ride. Very nice option.
Boarding: Arrived about 1pm at port. We had priority boarding our friends did not. Made no difference, we both were in our rooms within minutes of each other. Very quick even at that early boarding hour.
Room: We opted for the Jr Suite with balcony, same as other cruises we've taken. Best room yet! Felt larger More than other lines. Definitely more storage areas, included two closets, lots of shelving, a dressing area, double sinks and Jaccuzi tub. Balcony was not deep but had three chairs, one that reclined.
Our friends had an interior cabin, twin beds. Very small by comparison. They were impressed when they saw our room.
Stewards: Ours were awesome! Extra tips awesome.
Dining: A big let down. We thought the food was mediocre at best. Avoid the fish, none of these dishes were well prepared including the lobster in the Steakhouse. Chicken was only marginal. Beef was the best choice but even this was hit and miss. Wait staff was hit/miss. Some made us feel welcome and happy. One creeped all of us out - both men and women. After the second experience we asked not to be seated there again and were accomodated, no questions, no problems.
Buffet and Lido deck: More mediocre food. Scrambled eggs were powdered. Omelettes, however, were worth the wait. Bacon was crispy. Beyond that, it was all routine fare. Nothing to inspire you. Best bets were Guy Fieri burgers and breakfast in the Golden with cook to your order eggs, etc. Guy's burgers were very tasty despite the look. Burrito bar was good too. Avoid the fish and chips place over the buffet. Not worth the walk up the stairs in our opinion. For your fries fix go to Guys.
Activities: Many activities for the younger sets. Special areas and activities for 8 and below, pre and younger teens, and older teens. I saw the younger set at some activities and they all looked happy. A teen girl asked our friends teen daughter if she wanted to come to the older teen dance and talked about how much fun it was. Imagine a stranger asking another stranger if they knew about this cool dance place and sounding really excited about it. Carnival was doing something right for this age group. (The friends daughter did not go)
Shows: Evening entertainment would have been marginal on a non-spring break cruise. But, this cruise was at least 1/3 people under 18. They are not interested in show tunes, ballroom dancing, floor show dance routines, and Sinatra and Sammy Davis impersonators. Frankly, I'm not either and I'm 60. On a positive note, the comedians were great, both the PG shows and adult.
Debarkation: Orderly and smooth. The only hold up has nothing to do with the cruise lines - customs can be slow and lines can be long. Less

Cabin review: 7314
Carnival Liberty, port side, Jr Suite with balcony, #7314. Felt like the largest room we've been in of the mini-suite class. Two closets with adequate hanging rod and shelving space. Multiple storage locations within the room. Bed was comfortable, but not great. Bathroom was the largest yet and had double sinks and a Jacuzzi tub! Took a while to figure out the buttons for the lighting. Look for the switch to the mini-cans. It's also a dimmer and can serve as a low night light setting. Balcony was not deep but large enough to have three chairs including one that reclined and a table. We had two tables until they washed the deck on the port side and the furniture got rearranged with our neighbors. Flat screen TV with a VHS/DVD player. Sofa converts to a bed. Our room was in a quiet location.
