Carnival Valor service dissappointment

Sail Date: March 2013
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: San Juan

Thirty of us planned a Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Valor. I am a gold member, so I have been on Carnival several times.
We chose the Valor because of the itinerary and it was not a disappointment. However, the service in the Washington Lower dining room was another story. Apparently Carnival has cut back half of the dining staff for whatever reason. The service was horrible. Normally by the second night, the staff remembered what you drank and had it at the table soon after arriving without being asked. This time however, you would have to remind them 2 or 3 times to bring ice tea, milk or whatever. We were always the last to receive our food and half the time is was wrong.
The cabin steward was great and the drink waiters were abundant, but I guess the dining room service is no longer important.
Normally we don't do excursions promoted by the cruise line, but this time we did the Pigeon Island kayak excursion form Carnival. This was one of the worst More excursions I have ever had the pleasure of taking. Needless to say, this won't happen again.
There will have to be a lot of changes before I consider taking another Carnival Cruise. Less

Port and Shore Excursions

We did a private catamaran tour by Cool Running. The boat held about 40 people and we made up 29 of them. We snorkeled with Sea Turtles and saw two different sunken ships. Then we did a cruise of the part of the island and parked for lunch and swimming. The lunch was better than what we received on the ship. Chicken, Fish, Salad, you name it, as well as open bar. They opened the side of the catamaran so we could dive into the water and swim until it was time to return to the port. A great crew and great music on the way back. I would highly recommend Cool Running Catamaran Tour.

We took a taxi to cockleshell beach. Rented wave runners and had a blast. We ate at Reggae Beach Bar which is excellent. The gift shop there was excellent as well. No pressure to buy at all and we received a 10% discount because we were eating there too.

We did take the pigeon island kayak excursion. Would not recommend this at all.

We rented jeeps and toured the island. Maho beach is a must see. The best time to be there is between 11:50 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. It is crazy to see the people get blasted by the jets landing and taking off. We ate at Sky's the Limit on the French side of the island. The food was good and the prices were reasonable.

St. Thomas is always a fun port. We were going to do a wave runner tour, but it was cancelled because of the high surf. We ended up at Megan Bay and had a great day at the beach.
