Our cruise on the Eurodam started out pretty rocky. Our flight was delayed at the last minute, which left us on a redeye from LA to Ft. Lauderdale. Not a good beginning. We flew into Orlando, and had planned to stay over for the night and then drive down to Ft. Lauderdale in the morning. As it turned out we ended up arriving in Orlando, checking into our hotel at 7am for a shower, and driving down the coast.
Budget rental cars is terrible. I have nothing good to say about them, aside from the fact that they don't charge a fee for picking up/dropping off in a diff't location. The lineups were long, agents were slow, etc.
I would not suggest this particular drive. It actually took us about 3.5 hours to get to Ft. Lauderdale. We very nearly missed the cruise, GPS directed us to closed roads, thru construction, etc...
Once on the Eurodam, things started off lovely. The muster station drill was smooth, we boarded at 3pm and went straight there. We had booked a cabana on the Lido deck, so we headed there to check it out. It was the best part of our trip. Seriously, for 199$ it is so worth it! Bryan and Alex were so great. they were friendly, funny, and just really nice guys. i would strongly recommend this if you spend any time around the pool. also, the cabana table service at lunch, champagne, and choc covered strawberries were all nice perks!
the dining room was okay. servers seemed stressed, overworked, and not super friendly. we asked for juice or milk for our children, and were told these drinks were only available for breakfast. what?? no screwdrivers for the adults, either i guess! we actually preferred the Lido buffet, which had some great choices for supper.
the kids club was fantastic! Jennifer and Aaron were so great with the kids. our 6 year old didn't participate once in the kids club on our disney cruise in 2011, but she couldn't wait to get to the kids club on the eurodam!
grand turk - we hung out on the beach for the day
st thomas - great excursion to coral world for the kids. wish it were longer, tho, as coki beach right next door is amazing!
puerto rico - we paid a tour guide 10$ pp at the pier and he took us for a driving tour of san juan. it was a nice, easy way to see the sites and probaby better than the public transport we had planned to use.
half moon cay - good water feature/park for the kids. it was very windy/rainy this day so we didn't stay for the beach bbq, but i heard it was good.
i really enjoyed the eurodam. i know many people say it's not for kids, but our kids are pretty well behaved and we found everyone to be very friendly. we had a lot of compliments on our children from other passengers, and that's such a great feeling! there were some rowdier older children on the ship, and i'm not sure they had parents on board, as the marco polo got a bit out of hand one day...
oh yeah, and the disembarkation took FOREVER! only three customs agents. pretty sure that's not a reflection of HAL in any way, tho!
also, aqua aerobics - so much fun. lots of activities available if you're interested.
