We chose Tampa as the embarkation port because the New Orleans hotels were booked solid because of the Superbowl. The 6 AM direct flight from Providence to Tampa brought us to the boarding area very early and the NCL check-in was superb even though we were not supposed to check in at that early time.

We found the Dawn to be very clean and inviting. The on-line deal for 3 specialty restaurants plus a free bottle of house wine, Tisdale, which we drink at home for 3 bottles for $12, is a good deal considering on-board it is $27. We liked Cagney's the best. The other two were fine but we would not spring for the extra money.

The entertainment was average, have seen better on NCL.

The stateroom was clean and the steward excellent. The toilet area could have an inch of extra space if they took out the door between the toilet and the sink. Who needs it?

We would have used the casino if they had a blackjack table with a $5 minimum to get people started but I More can't see dropping $10 in one minute.

Disembarkation was a disaster. The ship was supposed to arrive a 8 AM but the entire bay of Tampa was closed to shipping due to dense fog and we anchored out. When we finally berthed port side to it was 5 PM. The 'easy walk off' was anything but that. It was disorganized with lines forming on both the starboard and port sides and no one telling the people in line on the port side that they were in the wrong line. Most people, like us, missed their flights and had to rebook and to find a hotel for the night. NCL did open up the Internet for 15 minutes for free but with the slow access time due to narrow bandwidth, bookings took a long time.

We hope that the travel insurance bought as a package will pay. We had to stay in a hotel 2 nights before Southwest had seats available. Less

Cabin review: Mid-Ship Balcony

Midships BA port side was a great location, no noise, a close distance to an elevator. As with all NCL ships built in Germany, the sole A/C plug is wired incorrectly, the grounding hole should be on the bottom therefore you can't plug in a night lite.

Port and Shore Excursions

We hired a private van with 10 other people who were all interested in the cultural experience of seeing the old and new parts of this former British colony.

We stayed in the area that was built by the cruise lines and watched the younger crowd swimm with the dolphins. With 3 other cruise ships in port, we figured Mayan ruins would be crowded.

Worth a visit if one has never been to this part of the world. we hired a van with 8 other people and the driver showed us the remote parts of the island where the crashing waves make swimming almost impossible. Again with 3 other cruise ships in port, we figured the Mayan ruins would be crowded and we did not want to be part of a herd.

It's an age thing and people who love snorkeling, etc. would rate it Higher. We hired a taxi to drive us around the island without stopping at the obligatory souvenir shops. The poverty is depressing.
