Some friends of ours wanted to cruise the eastern Caribbean this winter and said they preferred sailing with Princess. We have sailed Princess twice and we also like them. But we were looking for specific ports of call, and the Norwegian Sun was going to all the ports we wanted to go to. (St. Thomas,Dominica,Barbados,St. Lucia, and St.Martin). This was also a 10 day cruise as opposed to a 7 day and the price was right. My wife and I had previously sailed on the NCL Pearl and even though it wasn't our favorite ship we had no reservations about sailing with NCL again. Our friends had never sailed NCL.
Room. We were a little concerned about this being an older ship, but the ship was in very good condition and we liked the lay out. We decided to go cheap and got inside rooms midship on the 9th level. Our room was one of the biggest rooms we have ever had. There was plenty of storage space and the room was laid out nicely. There was an old style TV in the room that was replaced during the cruise with a nice flat screen TV. There was a small refrigerator in the room and an in-room safe. The blow dryer is mounted on the wall about the toilet in the bathroom. My wife would have preferred a real blow dryer. The bed was just ok, and the 4 pillows that were on the bed were quite hard. The second day my wife asked our room steward for some softer pillows and there were two softer pillows on the bed that night, along with the other 4.
Food. We quite enjoyed the food on this cruise. The buffet had a good selection of food and we loved the ice cream bar, with both soft and hard ice cream. At night they had crepes, which were also pretty tasty. We ate all our dinners in one of the two main dining rooms. The service was good and so was the food. We had no complaints whatsoever about the cuisine, (except maybe that shrimp cocktails were never an option). There was lobster offered on two different nights.
Entertainment. We loved the entertainment on this cruise. We went to every show offered in the starlight theater. All were very good, from the ventriloquist, to the hypnotist, to the sun production cast shows. Shane Tapper performed in many of the smaller venues and was very good, as was the band SOUL. We even did Karaoke one night. The Ryder cup golf tournament was great fun.(sort of like mini-golf around the atrium).
Staff. The staff went above and beyond to make this an enjoyable cruise. Cruise director Richard was the best cruise director was have ever had. He acted like he was your best friend and was always out and about greeting people and talking to them. His staff was just as personable and fun. Every crew member seemed like they went out of their way to be warm and pleasant. We were very impressed with Hotel director Jacobsen, who also was always out and about greeting and speaking to guests. He was helping serve lunch at the pool deck bbq and he was at ship side waiting to greet you as your returned to the ship from a day ashore, along with Richard and other crew members.
Upon returning to the ship from a day ashore, your were greeted on the pier with cold drinks, cookies, sometimes ice cream, and cool wash clothes. What a classy touch.
Embarkation and disembarkation were both very organized and smooth.
I cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed cruising on the NCL Sun. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to go on a first class cruise. Great food, great staff, great entertainment, great ship.
