Better than expected

Sail Date: February 2013
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)

We picked this cruise for the itinerary. Never had been on Carnival before, but have sailed NCL and Princess. We were very happy with this cruise. This is the first cruise we have taken where the Room Steward called us by name. We had a balcony cabin, which was larger than either NCl or Princess. It was just 2 of us so we had lots of space for our things. Embarkation was a breeze. We got to port about 11:30 and on the ship by 12:00. We were told our room would not be ready until 1:30. We went to Lido deck and had lunch. Afterward we explored the ship. Went to our room at 1:20 and it was ready. The whole ship was in great shape. The crew were constantly cleaning and painting. The food was tasty but not as diverse as on other cruises. We ate in the MDR for 4 nights. The waiter knew our names there also. We had anytime dining, yet they always tried to sit you with the same waiter. The first night we waited maybe 10 minutes for a table. The only other night we had to More wait was the first formal night. We were given a beeper and waited maybe 15 minutes. Sometimes we ate with others and sometimes just the two of us.

Lots to do on the ship. They had 2 great comediennes. They would have a late show for Adults only. Great Piano Bar. Also had a nightclub that played a lot of Motown-which we loved. Trivia contests were fun. They had a casino, which took my money-oh well. They also had a miniature golf course which was fun. We used the slide, but never watched any movies on the big screen. Couple of complaints, our shower always overflowed, drain very slow. Told the steward but guess there was nothing he could do. Went through a lot of towels!!!!!! Also the layout is confusing. There is no promenade that goes completely around the ship, just on one side and then you have to go through the middle to get to the other side. Also sometimes to get places you would have to walk through a dining room, unless you wanted to go up and down stairs. Not a big deal, just different than other ships I have sailed.

We did go to the SunKing steakhouse, which was phenomenal. The waitstaff was like 2 to a table. The food was wonderful. I had the fillet and could not finish it and my husband had the Surf and Turf. He said it was the best steak he had ever eaten.

Loved the ports. First was Key West. We had been there before so just walked around. Next port was Grand Cayman. This was a tender port but we had no line getting off the ship. We swam with the Stingrays and snorkeled. We used Captain Marvins for this excursion. Loved it. Next port was Jamaica. We did Dunn's River Falls and Bamboo Beach. We bought the excursion through Carnival. The Falls took about an hour to climb, pretty difficult but fun. I had read where after the climb the locals hound you to buy their stuff. This did not happen at all. Never bothered us. Also while we climbed the falls there was someone who took a movie of our group. bought the movie for $40 and it is great!!!!The beach was gorgeous, water was warm and clear.

All in all loved the cruise. The crew was friendly and accommodating. They even brought you drinks in the buffet. Would not hesitate to sail Carnival again. Less

Cabin review: Carnival Freedom Balcony Panorama 1043

Had balcony cabin 1043. It was a good size. Had 2 closets for clothing and then one with shelves. More than enough room for 2. Also the bathroom had enough shelves. Good location, not noisy at all. Lots of storage space. Bathroom a typical size for a cruise, small shower space.

Port and Shore Excursions

Snorkeling

(5)
We had an early excursion at 8:30 so got plenty of time to snorkel. It was the best snorkeling I had done. I have done snorkeling in Cancun, Grand Turks and Acapulco. Water was clear and fish were plentiful. Trip was not so crowded so you would not bump into other snorkelers. I loved it.

Stingray Swim

(5)
Loved loved it. We were there early enough so the Stingray sandbar was not too crowded. We got to feed the stingrays and hold them and kiss them. I felt as though we had enough time here. There was someone who took pictures of us with the stingray. You could then buy the pics for $40-I thought this was a good deal since there was at least 15 personalized pics of us and some pics of the coral.

We just love Key West. We had vacationed there before so did not take an excursion. There is lots to see from Hemmingway's House(and 6 toed cats), Truman's Little White House, The Southernmost Point of the US and Duval Street. Lots of places to eat and stores to browse.

Beach Break

Loved the beach. We were given beach chairs to use. They also brought around Rum Punch, lemonade and water. I felt they were too slow in serving us. They also served us food, but the same thing-very slow in serving. I would rather they had a buffet and we could eat when we wanted to. Also the food portions were small. Loved the beach, not the food so much.

Dunn's River Falls

Great fun to climb the falls. The water was cold, but when climbing it felt good. It was pretty strenuous. The guide we had was pushy, kept trying to go in front of other groups. There is also a natural water slide you can slide, was fun. Also they have you do a backward plunge. There was someone taking a movie of our group which we bought. It was fun to see the movie when we returned. The CD was $40
