We sailed on the Explorer of the Seas, 9/3/2006 sailing to Bermuda. The ship was absolutely beautiful - biggest we've been on.
The best entertainment was live music and we went dancing every night. We were somewhat disappointed at the condition of some activities: the arcade was not air conditioned and video games (and one air hockey tables) often did not work. The shuffleboard equipment was old or missing.
Our cabin was fine. We were in the least expensive, inside room cabin and it was bigger than our previous cabins on Carnival (Triumph) and Norwegian (Norway). The bathroom was small - but adequate. The room was clean and well cared for. The bed was older and was ready to be replaced. The room attendant went above and beyond what was expected (we tipped her extra).
The dining room service was excellent. Food in dining room was average, the best dinner was lobster night. It is clear that the cruise lines have cut back on food because even Carnival 4 yrs ago had better food than this cruise. There was no meal that we wanted to order several of, except the lobster tails. We recommend you make reservations at Portofino's since we heard the food was much better. The buffets were good, but not great.
The photography was disorganized and of poor quality. We could not find our formal night pictures anywhere - we only found our pictures from the first night. We had no interest in buying those because they were individual pictures and we were wearing casual attire. We probably would have purchased the format night picture - but it was no where to be found. Other ships organize photos by table section in addition to seating time.
Boarding and disembarking this ship from Cape Liberty was a pleasure. The taxis were overpriced (our $35 taxi ride to the ship was $44 on the way home). The luggage process was well organized.
The entertainment we saw on this ship was fine - but on previous cruises we saw Broadway type shows - this cruise only had variety type shows (magic, dancing, comedy, singing).
Overall, this cruise was a bargain for the price we paid and we met some really fun people along the way. Next time we will try a different cruise line and book dinners in the specialty restaurants.
