OK, I've traveled on over 28 cruises in the past 22 years and this time tried for the first time NCL'S NORWEGIAN SPIRIT., 6 nights from NYC. I wanted the Dawn, but no space for a triple was available and my 1st choice was the Explorer of the Seas but also, no triple available & although i take my teenage daughter w/me, this time she brought a friend as well. The last week in August is the only time we can travel as she is a camp counselor prior and then school starts right after.  I read up on the ship and many aspects did therefore not surprise me. We also sailed with friends who had a beautiful suite on board. Embarkation was typical for NYC and took about 1 hour. Suite passengers were able to get right on. We could get right into the cabin and stored our carryons and went exploring. If you know anything about the Freestyle Cruising, you know there are many restaurants. There were. But we went to 1 of the main diningrooms night one. The food was not very good and service was just "ok". The all night Blue Lagoon restaurant was either too crowded early on, or if we went late, midnight or later, we could not get service. We sat one night for over 1/2 hour, and noone waited on us. They just talked among themselves behind the counter. Announcements were made throughout the day, but there is no way to hear them in the cabin. You either must be out on deck or open your door.  There is also no radio in the cabins. Room Service was fairly prompt and good. Breakfast at the buffet, Raffels, was good and had a good choice of foods. Breakfast in Windows, 1 of the main diningrooms was ok, again, if you could get service. WE would wait more than 15 minutes and 1 day, just up and walked out and told them on the way out, that noone ever waited on us and just got a "nod". In fact, the only restaurants which had good food and great service, were the extra venue "Pay" ones. I don't like the idea of paying a lot of money for a cruise and having bad service and food unless you pay add'l.  The French Rest. and Cagney's were both very good and if you went at 5:30 or 6pm, it was 1/2 price, and since that was the only way to enjoy dinner, we had to to that. By the way, lunch in the main dining rooms also left a lot to be desired and when ordering, they wanted to know what we wanted for dessert immediately. I said i would tell them after if finished my sandwich, which i had just ordered, and they said, no, i needed to tell them NOW or not get it. I didn't get it.

My daughter went into the main dining room one evening and wanted just plain pasta w/melted butter...they said she couldn't get it. I've NEVER been on any cruise where such a thing was not possible! I was very annoyed.

Entertainment, when available, was good. The 2 musical shows were very good and the comedians were not bad. The casino is rather small.
