Carnival Valor - Western Caribbean

Sail Date: July 2006
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

This was our ninth cruise, so we are not new to this. We booked with Carnival because of their itinerary. There were thirteen people in our party. We were highly disappointed in some areas of service. The embarkation was a problem. They had us in line outside the embarkation building in the hot Florida sun. We felt like a herd of cattle waiting to be slaughtered. They want you to register on line, however, they did not even ask for the fun pass they had us print from the computer.

Our cabin was dirty; however, it was not our cabin stewards fault because he had just arrived from his vacation. We asked him to please clean it and he did. Afterward the cabin was clean and he prepared the sofa in our cabin twice when we babysat our grandchildren.

We appreciated having body soap and shampoo in our cabin as well as beach towels. There were also some samplers of commercial personal products such as razors and creams.

One thing that disturbed my husband and I was More the lack of security personnel walking the halls during the night to prevent loud noises. Some of the other passengers were intoxicated and would roam the halls screaming and knocking on peoples doors while the other passengers slept. It appeared to us that the Valor did not have enough personnel to accommodate the number of passengers. The tables on the Lido Deck in Rosies restaurant were not picked up in a timely manner and there were not enough waiters or waitresses to take drink orders in the different bars and lounges. The food has gotten better from the last time we cruised on Carnival. However, we felt that the service needs to improve. It appeared they were always in a rush because they had to take care of too many people. Everybody in our party felt that the entertainment was very good, specially my grandkids, my son and my nephews because they partied all of the time.

We booked most of our shore excursions with private vendors which we contacted ourselves through the internet and by the recommendation of friends. We rented a car in Grand Cayman and went to a beach called Rum Point. In Roatan, Honduras, we contacted Theris Dixon on the internet and we had a driver waiting for us which took us around the island and to a very nice beach. In Belize, we went cave tubing with Cave Tubing.com and had a blast. The only place we did an excursion with the cruise line was in Costa Maya and that was only OK. However, we had lunch on the island and the food was very good. If the embarkation had been a problem, the disembarkation was a nightmare. They luggage was all over the place. People were just going over them and pushing other people to get to them. It felt like the run of the bulls in Pamplona with only one street taking you the outside. Will we ever take another Carnival Cruise, maybe? Less
