Ever since Expo '86, when I watched the cruise ships bound for Alaska embark from Vancouver, an Alaskan cruise has been a dream itinerary. When my daughter moved to Kodiak Island last fall, it was a great opportunity to visit her and then go on a cruise!

We are in our mid-fifties, live in a small midwestern city and wish we traveled more! After we turned 46, we have finally traveled to London and Ireland. In the last 12 years, my husband and I have cruised three times on RCCL and on the Caribbean Princess last fall. We took the advice of cruise addicts and booked a "ghost" cruise. It came in handy when we decided to take off for Alaska.

Our internet cruise agency was great. We booked our trip around when the cheapest day was to fly to Alaska- July 3rd won out. Then we booked the cruise rather last-minute. We went for an interior room, being warned by our daughter that Morgan would probably not be able to sleep well with the long daylight. We did a guarantee room to get a very low price ($541pp!). It took most of the day to fly to Kodiak Island. I know Kodiak is not on many itineraries (Denali, Anchorage and Fairbanks being more common destinations), but if you can afford the usual $150 each way to get there-Go. Totally unspoiled, real Alaskan life. We saw more whales and could actually HEAR them coming from a secluded state park at Miller Point, than we did on the cruise. Stop by the Alutiiq Museum if you go (where my daughter works to research Alutiiq archeological finds). It is an amazing culture that was almost destroyed when the island was discovered to be a source of sea otter fur.
