Carnival Victory - Canada/New England

Sail Date: July 2006
Destination: Canada & New England
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)

This was our 1st time cruising and 1st trip to Canada. We are from NYC so the commute to and from the pier was a breeze via mass transit. After researching and living on Cruise Critic I was prepared for the best and worst of Carnival. To my surprise, the overall experience was FANTASTIC!!!

The ship was beautiful, huge and clean. It took us at least 3 days to get a handle on where things were located because the set up of the ship was confusing. There were two separate areas for dining (Atlantic and Pacific). We were signed up for the late seat dining which was fine. For the most part, we ate all meals in the dining rooms. The buffet food was okay but not as hearty and tasty as the dining room meals. We had a very fun and interactive group of people at our dinner table and we exchanged contact information to book a reunion cruise in 2 years.

One of dining mates invited us to their Suite for wine and chocolate covered strawberries. Their suite More cabin was extraordinary with a huge balcony, Jacuzzi, Wet bar and sitting area.

We enjoyed the activities from Bingo, Karaoke, Clubs (Arctic lounge the best for dancing), casinos and lounging on the Lido deck listening to Caribbean music. The drinks were average and they had daily drink specials. You had to hog the beach chairs for the day or you wouldnt have a place to sit as the chairs were in very high demand. The elevators were slow. The weather held out for us until the last day which was very foggy, misty and cool.

The overall service on the ship was wonderful. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. We knew our room steward, Jose who always welcomed us as we went in and out of the room. Our dining room staff was also outstanding with service and knew us on a first name basis.

We had two incidents with a security officer on the ship who gave us a hard time about souvenirs we purchased in St. John that was a candle but wrapped up in a box.

Thanks to this website we booked our excursion NOT via Carnival and thank god because we saved TONS of cash. In St. Johns, we did the Highlights city tour and in Halifax we did the Harbour Hopper. The weather was MAGNIFICENT as we were told it had been raining non stop in both places for weeks. We really lucked out. The photo gallery set up was horrible because it was located in 2 sections and you couldnt purchase all of your photos at 1 area esp. for those of us who wanted to decide the best pics out of all poses.

We had an inside guarantee cabin (rm 2400) which was small with no windows, yet very comfortable for two young ladies. The beds and bedding were SOOO comfortable. We came very prepared with an alarm clock and night light which was helpful. We had no problems hiding our booze in checked in bags. Our ice and towels were replenished twice daily. The room was clean and there were no odors, despite the fact we came prepared with room deodorizers so our room smelled like watermelon and strawberries. Carnival definitely should use garbage bags for the garbage cans but we made do and used our own. There were a few regular channels on TV but the news channels showed Denver, Colorado news.

Disembarkation was smooth with no problems. We forgot to use the color tags that are used to identify our bags once we passed customs. However, it only took 5 minutes to locate them. Several people informed us Carnival was a nice starter cruise but strongly encouraged us to try RCL and Princess as our next cruise choice. Overall our experience was outstanding and we would definitely cruise Carnival again with no hesitation. Less
