Sail Date: Dec 2005

This was our ninth cruise. Our fifth with Princess and 4 with Carnival. We were joined by our son, daughter-in-law, husband's brother and his wife. We had a great time on this cruise, but decided we prefer larger and newer ships.

Embarkation: Princess excels in this area. We boarded our hotel shuttle at 11 am and were on the ship by noon. Better than last year when we sailed on the Carnival Legend and stood outside for over two hours and then waited another 45 minutes in the terminal.

Ship: The Sun is a beautiful ship and in excellent condition in most areas of the ship. It shows its age in the Horizon Court and in some of the public restrooms. There was a sewer smell in several areas of the ship and midway through the cruise the sewer backed up into my brother and sister-in-laws shower. They asked to be given a new cabin but were told that the ship was full and none were available. The bathroom was cleaned and the problem was resolved, but we did hear of this happening in several other cabins. Around the fifth day we noticed several Hazmat teams cleaning rooms on our deck and it was about then that they started using servers in the Horizon Court. Hand sanitizers were present at all eating venues and also at the gangway to be used when exiting and entering the ship. We avoided the virus by our constant washing of hands and use of Purell hand sanitizer. There was more motion on this ship than any we have sailed on before. We all took Bonine the first two days of the cruise, the first time my husband and I have needed to use motion pills. Food: We had early dining in the traditional dining room, in the future we will opt for late dining. We had six stops on this cruise and we were too rushed getting ready for dinner when we returned from the ports. The food in the dining room was very good. Probably the best lobster we have had on a cruise. Our waiters were Milan, Jan Paul and Ramona from Romania, who helped out when her area was slow. We had some big eaters in our group and we kept them running with our extra orders. We mentioned one night that we liked creme brulee and the head waiter for the room overhead us and brought us 12 servings of creme brulee the next evening (there were 6 of us at our table). I can't give the same high marks to the food in the Horizon Court. Lunch wasn't too bad, there was usually something there that was good, but not all. Breakfast was the worst meal, if you are an egg lover, take the time to special order your eggs. The scrambled eggs were always runny and the ready made omelets were very rubbery. Coffee was typical food court coffee except that it was very seldom hot. Even in the dining room. Verdi's pizza is a nice escape from the mad rush of the Horizon Court. I thought the pizza was good, not great, and my son enjoyed the Calzones. The Terrace Grill was pretty good too. Entertainment: This is the area I found most lacking on the Sun. It was a much older crowd, which we expected on a 10 day cruise, and you could tell from the entertainment offered. There were four production shows that were pretty good, standard cruise type shows and we did enjoy the comedians. One evening was a classical baritone, we skipped this show but did hear him at the farewell show. He was very good, but I don't think I would have enjoyed an entire show with just him performing. The CD was John Clelford, he mainly introduced the shows and then disappeared. His staff was quite young and didn't interact well with the passengers. They enjoyed being with each other, but didn't do much to get the passengers involved. Windy weather caused the pool games to be cancelled, something my husband always enjoys. Island night was fun but seemed too end rather early. We aren't big partiers but enjoy more of a night life than the Sun offered. We did have a good time and enjoyed the 10 day itinerary and all the ports. We love to cruise and will go on Princess again, but probably not the Sun Princess. We prefer ships with more entertainment options. If that isn't important to you, I would definitely recommend this cruise.
