Traveled with children

We are a family of four. My husband and I are 37-40 yrs, and two children, ages 7 and 4. This is our 5th cruise. This was the 3rd cruise that we brought our children aboard also. We have previously only cruised with Carnival, and this was our first cruise with Royal Caribbean. We discovered cruising with kids in 2003, when our daughter was 5. We highly recommend cruising! We think it is the perfect blend of a family vacation, with lots of alone time for Mom and Dad!

Overall our experience on this ship was good. We thought that the Adventure Ocean program was great, however Carnival does it a little better. On RCCL, you have to do late seating if you want to have dinner without the kids. You will have to order room service, or go to Windjammer buffet to feed them early, get back to room and get yourself ready for dinner, then take them to kids club for 7pm. Late seating dinner is not until 8:30 pm. On several nights there was a show before dinner at 7pm (which were wonderful!), which worked out great with or without kids. We prefer eating a bit earlier, so this was not the ideal situation for us. Carnival will take your kids to dinner each night at 6pm, allowing you to have early seating, and see shows after dinner. Both will watch your kids till 10pm at no charge, and later for nominal fees. Outside of the dinner situation, we thought the program was great, and our kids enjoyed it very much! We like that both cruise lines will watch your kids on ship while in port so you can go ashore without kids in tow. The size of the cabin was somewhat disappointing. I booked online with RCCL, and booked a "Large Superior Interior Cabin". Pictures of it online are very deceiving. We felt very cramped in it. Felt much smaller than Carnival's Interior Cabins that accommodate 4 persons. Shows that square footage is greater, however it feels smaller. Could be the way they are designed. Also, our cabin was under the pool deck, which is a little noisy, especially if there is a party at night.

This was the first time we had cruised during December, and we had a few rough nights at sea. When you cross "cool fronts", the water is rough. Never got sick, just a little wobbly. Never had to take any motion sickness medicine. For those of you traveling with kids and wondering how they would handle it, my kids never even noticed! They were too busy playing and exploring!
