This was our 10th cruise, second on Celebrity. This was the most friendly ship ever. Smooth getting on and off the ship, well done Celebrity. We booked this at the last moment as the price was just too good to let by.
The view of the Hubbard glacier is fantastic. The sounds of ice crashing down off of the glacier is impossible to describe. The ocean was very smooth for the complete trip.
CD is a fellow named John and he has an unusual voice that you will either love or hate. Food was great and we thoroughly enjoyed the ship.
As usual we attended all the shows. The ladder guy is amazing with his stunts and his humour. The singers and dancers did 4 shows and they were very good. This is more shows than usual however they were very good. The Cirque de Soliel (sp?) is really a lounge at the front of the ship with "ambiance". We were told a number of times it is not a "show". We did not spend anytime there, so we can't really comment on it's value. It seemed a bit too bizarre for our tastes, but I am sure there are those who loved the experience.
We arrived in Anchorage and we found this city to be old and dumpy. The Westin Hotel seems well placed if you are catching the bus at the Egan Centre. We stayed at the Sheraton which around 5 blocks away which offered free shuttle service with a smile. The Sheraton is showing it's age though.
The ship needs to manage cigar smokers better (not just this cruise). I can handle cigarette smoke from a distance but cigars just "reek" and destroy anything in its path. At the back of the Summit is a beautiful open deck area where one could sit an enjoy their breakfast. However we had one cigar smoker who liked to sit right in the middle of the area. I noted Celebrity also had a cigar stand in this area as well, so Celebrity did nothing to monitor this area. Nothing like a little cigar smoke with your food.
We are daily users of the Gym and we were disappointed with the condition of the 4 elliptical machines. 3 of the 4 machines were in very poor condition and only 4 machines total. I am not sure picks the exercise equipment on cruise ships but there seems to always be a line up for the tread mills and ellipticals while the rest of the machines sit empty. They could trade a number of stair climbers etc for more ellipticals. The exercise rooms was large and had nice windows.
We were considered "select" with Celebrity as we had gained a similar status with RCCL. That gave us some nice perks including a free wine blending event in the Normandie restaurant. It was very well done by the Bulgarian Wine expert. It was hard work blending 6 glasses of different types of red wine into the ultimate blend.
Overall a very good cruise. Our waiter Treavor was from Jamaica without the "Yeah man" accent and Sebastian from Poland made a great team. It was a true Griswald experience.
