Ship Facts: Carnival Splendor Review (by Cruise Critic!) | Carnival Splendor Deck Plans
Carnival Spendor to Hawaii...nice but lots of let downs
I have been waiting for this trip to Hawaii for almost a year! 15 night on a cruise ship and I was so looking forward to it! And unfortunatly I was let down. Hawaii was great, can't help that we had some poor weather along the way and while in Honolulu and had our Luau canceled and our Missouri visit canceled due to rainy and windy weather. Natural events are beyond anyone's control, but what really frustrated me was the things that can be controled. Like the fact we had 8 days at sea and the "indoor" pool was almost always not available due to netting or being drained all together. When it is cold and windy outside and the glass auwning is closed, why are we not able to use the pool inside? The least we should be able to do when the weather isn't great outdoors is to get into a HEATED indoor pool! But like i said, it was either netted off or emptied out most of the trip. I guess i should of gotten a clue how it was going to be when we boarded the ship and the pool had a net over the empty pool and the thunderball pool aswell was netted and empty. I asked where the children were suppost to be able to swim as the only open pool was the adult pool and the staff said maybe tomorrow. You would think, of all days, the embarkation day, should have all facilities up and running! Not to mention, there were only one day the whole cruise that the slide/putt putt was open! Luckily we went that day but only one time each and that was it for the rest of the trip, not that we didn't want to use it again...The spray park was open when we came on but it too seemed to be closed as the last time we tried using it. What saved the cruise in this regard to poor weather/lack of swimming was having the lounge chairs under the closed awening and the big screen tv with videos and relaxing videos of surf and beaches...the night time movies was nice as well. The "hot" tubs though were anything but hot but "tepid tubs" at best...the kids used the hot tubs as their personal swimming pools as the ones outdoors when they were open were freezing cold and not heated at all and when the winds are blowing 30mph, you don't want to step out of freezing water into the wind...

We have always loved the my time dining and made a routine of always going in at the earliest seating. But even so, we frequently, just my daughter and I, would take 2 hrs to get all 3 courses...one night it was 40 minutes to get the APPETIZER! Several nights we had to leave early and miss dessert because the wait was sooo long. The quality of the food was very hit and miss...nothing really just stood out as fabulous and most things didn't have much flavor at all....the fruit chiled soups were a favorite though and always love lobster tails although of the 15 nights with 2 elegant nights, they were only offered one time. The petit filet mignon was tender but most of the other foods were just not that great and some were actually gross (don't eat the meat loaf!) Fish should be tough, nor bland when its suppost to be a "award winning recipi for Bicardi" italian style. Just not that impressed with the dinners and that has always been our favorite meals to look forward to. Did enjoy eating in the Lido in the mornings and especially liked the daily variety of different eggs bennidict and other egg dishes available. Always love the frech toast and pancakes...wish though they offered all the topings that are available when you get these items in the sit down dinning. We mostly just snacked for lunch and grazed our dinners, mostly never eating more then a few bites of dinner due to poor flavored foods and just non appealing combinations. The Bacon Macaroni and Cheese was good the last night and made me long for more of these type of foods...but i heard alot of people complaining about the food...one night a gentleman sitting next to us complained about each and every course and multiple times on some of them as he got a couple of appetitzers and such and even spoke to the Maitrede about the poor quality food.

I do have to give rave reviews for camp carnival. They have always been a blessing to my children and make their vacations much to be remembered and they did not disappoint this time either. Daughter loved all the activities an looked forwar to spending her time with them. She brought home lots of special keep sakes (tshirt, book, arts and crafts) and even got to make a stuffed kitty :)...

Our room attendent was wonderful...always available when needed...LOVED our room 10-82...it was an inside handicape assessable room that worked wonderfully for us as it had a huge bathroom and walk in large shower two people could really get into! It had a fold down seat for showering, large room to move about in the room and bathroom and we had bunkbeds for my daughter and I...My only complaint for the room was the tv needed to be moved over about a foot or so so that if you were on the bottom bunk you can actually see the tv withough hanging off the bed.

The boarding process was also a NIGHTMARE!! Three hrs standing in lines, one after another...about 6 or so different lines we had to go through to get onto the ship and we got there right up 1200! Standing in the hot sun holding all your luggage and wearing hot clothes was not comfortable and no where to sit! When you thought you were finally getting somewhere, you saw all the lines twisting and curved out to everywhere...Disembarkation was better although getting to the super shuttle was a challenge with our luggage and they were not in close proximation to where we were coming off the ship. We have taken a cruise from this terminal before and didn't have any of these problems that we had this cruise which is really sad. We can about the same time last cruise and got to at least wait indoors, seated in air conditioning till it was time to board...and when we got off the ship, we were on the curb and picked right up instead of trying to drag our blocks a block or two away...not fun!!

I was really expecting a better cruise from carnival and did feel we were let down as there were so many days at sea, i knew they would be long but i expected to be able to relax by a USED pool and read a book...they had plenty of activities available but i'm more into the lazing around kind of cruiser so when the typical pool activies are limited, that doesn't give me much to do :( So, not sure if we will do another Carnival for our next cruise or go back to Royal Carribean whom we have had 3 prior cruises...at least their pools were ALWAYS open and warm enough to swim in even when we were in Alaska we could swim in heated pools!
