Not your typical Caribbean rum punch and pool party!: Celebrity Equinox Cruise Review by Living2Lands

Not your typical Caribbean rum punch and pool party!
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Fort Lauderdale (Port Everglades)
This cruise, from the moment we stepped on board the Equinox, was DEFINITELY our sort of cruise. It was a last-minute decision, that we rate as one of the best cruises we have ever taken! Celebrity always does a good job on their cabins, and our veranda was no exception. And our steward was friendly and right there whenever we needed him. And the ship was decked out both in Christmas trimmings, and Hanukkah lights.
But it was the ports that really kept us saying "WOW"! Cartagena, Colombia, to start, was an amazing mix of old and new. And from there to the Panama Canal (by bus...MUCH less costly than going through the canal on the ship), and then getting in touch with our 'natural' side in Costa More Rica, Honduras, Belize, and Cozumel...Rain forests, snorkeling, and visiting Mayan ruins (2 days before the 'end of the world' was to happen) was almost too much to experience!
On the 'at sea' days, we learned alot from the on-board lectures about the area, as well as being entertained nightly all along the ship.
The only thing that we found disappointing was the internet. So many people had it in their cabins, where they were uploading the 'pics to the grandkids', at 2MB per pic, that the response time was miserable. I gave up, and just used the hotspots in port...not Celebrity's fault, but they really need to work on limiting the type of use for the limited bandwidth (sorry, computer consultant).
All in all, a big "Yes!" to "Did you enjoy the cruise?" I would do this one again! Less
Cabin review: 1A9237 Deluxe Veranda 1A
9237 GREAT location, HUGE balcony. In 'the bump' so the cabin was also roomy. Close to the elevators and stairs, but no noise from them. Port side was best for land viewing on this trip.Read All Deluxe Veranda 1A (1A) Reviews >>
Port and Shore Excursions
We negotiated a private tour with the 'salesmen' standing all along the boardwalk. They will barter. I mentioned that I am a Senior Contributor to TripAdvisor, and that, to, helped.
Our guide was half Mayan, and shared much as we rode around....but especially at the temple sites that we visited. It was 3 days before the reported end of the world (end of the Mayan calendar), and he just laughed and shook his head when we asked about it...saying "You all have made such a big deal of this...it's just that now we must merge our calendar with yours...nothing more!"....
There is a pharmacy in port that has many popular items in stock. And plenty of places to eat.
Interesting city, filled with old and new sights.
We were there to investigate emeralds, so did this port on our own...we used the hop on/hop off bus, and it worked well. The only trouble with the bus was that since we were the only ship in port that day, we could not hop on and off...so we rode to the end, enjoyed the tour, and then took a cab back after finding our emeralds.
