From start to finish this has been the worst holiday. After traveling to Barcelona, after planes been cancelled and rerouted, our transfer company wouldn't pick us up as we were four and a half hours late.
So extremely stressed, we took a taxi to the ship, last passengers to arrive (in fact, in hindsight we wished we had missed the ship and gone straight to Madeira).
The personnel were all extremely courteous and efficient, so we boarded. The lobby looks alright, and we started to relax. Up to our room...we were living on the tenth floor with a balcony. The room was antiquated and small, shabby. The wardrobe small and badly designed, very difficult to use. The bathroom, was tiny, compartmentalized, titchy loo, with a wall..(pleased I am not overweight), titchy shower also walled with a small basin between. The bathroom was tiled, shabby and difficult to keep clean.
With our hopes of a decent place to sleep ruined, we decided to have dinner. First night we ate at the More
Garden restaurant, low ceilings very noisy and mediocre food.
We checked out the rest of the ship. The buffet, Raffles, was no better then a large Workman's canteen, noisy, smelly..we tried eating there once, very mediocre food, the stir fries all taste the same. Plenty of choice of tasteless fodder.
We ate once in one of their specialty restaurants, Teppanyaki, nothing wrong with the raw products, but once the food had been cooked it all tasted the same, a complete waste of money and time. The rest of our eating was in the main restaurant Windows. Much the nicest. Breakfast and lunch menu was the same every day....very boring, dinner was the same as everywhere else, tasteless and mediocre. The waiters and waitresses, however were lovely.
Unfortunately for us, the seas was very rough, when we arrived in Madeira our tour had been cancelled and the tour we took was not as written on the tour sheet. Next we stopped at Tenerife, had a lovely day there with a trip to Mount Teide..then on to Lanzarote...the ship was within swimming distance from shore before we heard that they could not land, because of high winds..we hoped they might try docking somewhere else, but were told withing the hour by a senior crew member that we would just sail on to Malaga, (we asked).
He also told us that we would just sail slower to Malaga and arrive a few hours early. Rough seas, and no compensation, not even a free glass of wine or an apology. When we arrived in Malaga the Captain said over the loudspeaker system that they had tried arrange another port (don't believe that for a second since we had been told before that they wouldn't). Great day in Malaga and ok trip back to Barcelona...Delighted that our transfer picked us up, and after long waits and technical problems on the flights back were at last home (not NCL's fault :).)
