Our Sun Cruise - a very nice experience!

Sail Date: January 2013
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: Miami

This was our tenth cruise, eighth on NCL. This was our first time to sail on the Sun. What a wonderful ship! Certainly no bells and whistles, but truly a nice, sufficient ship. We liked the smaller size. The size, combined with a longer length cruise, allowed us to make many friends and see folks on a regular basis throughout the cruise. We were on the 11 night Southern Caribbean itinary.

The food seemed to be better than our more recent cruises on NCL. I really think they are making improvements in this area. We sailed on RCL last year. The food on the Sun seemed very comparable, if not better than RCL and our other previous cruises. Good quality, full lobster tails were served in the MDR on both Day 1 and Day 11 -- that was a pleasant surprise. We were even selected to Dine with an Officer one evening -- that was truly interesting to ask a variety of questions.

Our CC group conducted a cabin crawl allowing us to see Owner's Suites, Penthouse, Balcony, More Ocean View and Inside cabins. That was a nice 'extra' for this cruise. While a bit older, the cabins seem larger than other ships we have sailed. We were in an Inside cabin. The cabin was very spacious with plenty of storage and space to spread out. (The shower is a different story.)

Our CC group was invited to a Galley Tour. What a wonderful experience to spend an hour and a half hearing about the different food preparation requirements and seeing all the planning and work that takes place to prepare 14,000 meals a day. Many great photo opportunities!

The Cartagena Columbia port visit was our least favorite. The four other ports were very nice. Our favorites were Aruba and St Thomas. The beaches on St Thomas/St John are absolutely beautiful! Get out and see the beauty!

We had five sea days. Other than four our five hours of wind, clouds and light rain, we were able to really spend good quality time taking in the sun's rays and enjoying the great weather. Two experiences that we had, not offered on other ships, were the opportunity to receive water "spray downs" on three different occasions during the hot days as well as popsicles delivered to us while absorbing the sunshine on the upper decks. Nice, unexpected additions to add enjoyment to the trip.

The entertainment was very nice! There were professional performers on nearly every evening, including singers/dancers, comedians, magicians, acrobats, hypnotist, etc. Additionally, several smaller venues around the ship offered live musical entertainment on a regular basis. The entertainment staff had plenty of activities to provide something for nearly every need or interest.

We enjoyed our dining experiences! NCL has really perfected the free style concept. We ate most evening meals in the Seven Seas dining room. There was never a need to wait and more often than not, we were seated at window locations. (We ate early, so that may have contributed to the no wait, excellent locations.)

We are fans of NCL... not truly committed to NCL exclusively, but we feel that we are able to get the most bang for our buck on NCL -- good value for the money!

We would be happy to recommend this cruise to anyone looking to visit some beautiful ports and experience a friendly/caring staff and crew for a wonderful cruising experience. Enjoy! Less
