1st Time Cruise with NCL

Sail Date: January 2013
Destination: Canary Islands
Embarkation: Barcelona

This was our first ever cruise so we didn't know what to expect.
We flew from Gatwick with Easy jet and how easy they were to use. Brilliant.
Arrived at the port and embarkation was easy and straight forward.
Our stateroom was ok and we were impressed with the amount of storage space there was. The bathroom was well laid out and surprisingly spacious.
The entertainment on board was a bit hit and miss and we found that the things that we were interested in often clashed and none of the activities are repeated.
The live music was good and Ian West was the highlight.
We saw some good shows in Stardust worth a particular mention was Broadway and Soul Sensation.
Food was plentiful and varied and we felt no need to use the specialty restaurants.
Disembarkation was easy and as our flight was early evening we used the luggage delivery that was available at the port and spent the day in Barcelona and used the aerobus to get to the airport.
Now for the bad More bit; We were supposed to land in Lanzarote but did not do so allegedly due to bad weather. However the weather was no where near as bad as when we first entered the Atlantic. The Pilot boat came out and from my port hole could see it had no problem getting to us. However the captain decided not to dock. It now transpires that this is the 3rd time that this part of the itinary has not taken place and always with the same excuse. The question I would have though is why close the portholes for safety reasons when not going into Lanzarote with very little swell and NOT close them in rough sea 4 days previous when the the wind was gale force 9 and 13 ft waves. My money is on it being a smoke screen to be able to use the excuse for not docking.
The result of this is that we had another day at sea with very little entertainment and no updated announcements from the captain after he said he was waiting to hear from Miami.
We could easily have gone to another canary island, Gibraltar or had 2 days in Malaga.

Tips: You can have your gratuities taken off your account on your last day.
If eating in Raffles get there early on for most meal times
Cigarettes are cheaper on the ship than on land averaging at £2.10 for 20
Don't be afraid to use the taxi tours when off ship Less

Port and Shore Excursions

Arrived on a Sunday to find that everywhere closed at mid day but we did not let this spoil our day. We took a taxi from the port which cost us 15 euros each and did a tour of the tourist spots. This took about 4 hours in total and the driver was at our disposal the whole time. I would definitely recommend this over the on board excursions. A visit to the gardens will cost you 5 euros to enter but the views are great and the plants and birds were lovely to see. Although the tour is a set route if you wanted to add in other stops it would not have been a problem.

Monday saw us at Tenerife. Again we took a taxi tour this one cost us 17 euros each but that was because we wanted to go to the beach as well as the fixed tour. This was a metered cab and we paid well under the clocked up amount for the distance traveled. We visited the House of Balconies, Puerto Cruz and the beach as well as going to various sight seeing stops. Total length of the tour was approx 4.5 hours. This could have been longer if we had wanted it to be.
