First Time Cruise out of New Orleans

Sail Date: April 2012
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: New Orleans

This was our first cruise. We left out of NO on April 7, 2012 for 7 night Western Caribbean cruise. Sailed on Voyager of the Seas. Our embarkation was very smooth. We were sitting by the pool by 12:00. We did not get our luggage before dinner but we had packed our carryons accordingly. So much easier than boarding a plane. We were very impressed with RCI.

Visited Falmouth, Jamaica; Grand Cayman and Cozumel. Grand Cayman and Cozumel were great. Would skip Jamaica in the future. Second trip there and it is so depressingly poor. Not a good destination.

We loved the ship. Our cabin was plenty big enough. As large as our deluxe Disney hotel rooms. Ordered the room service each morning. Our boys love room service. Bed was comfortable. We had a nice cabin steward. Room was cleaned nicely everyday. Steward made the towel animals each day for the boys. Rooms could do with an upgrade but were very comfortable, neat and clean. Had room to store all our stuff.

Ship was More very clean and neat. We thought it was very well kept. It was older but well taken care of. Only complaint was the pool did get messy during the day and could have used more housekeeping. Also, was irked by the saving of chairs. Supposedly not the policy but people did it and would leave their chairs for hours with towels on them. A huge pain! RCI should take up the towels so that others can use the chairs. Not enough room for this. Wish the pools were warmer and bigger. We are from Mobile, AL so our boys thought the pools were too cold to swim.

Public areas of the ship were very nice. Promenade was beautiful. Wish RCI would ban smoking. Very irritating to be exposed to cigarette smoke everywhere you go especially when you have allergies and dry eyes. They should really consider this especially in 2013.

Our 7 & 9 year old loved the kids clubs. They spent most of each day and night there. Would NOT eat dinner with us. Begged to spend each night there. It was great. They met several kids and made new friends. Also, we felt comfortable letting them roam the ship after the first day. They loved the free ice cream and pizza. They had so much fun with the independence. Neither of them had any trouble navigating the ship. They watched movies in the theater, played games, etc. We had a lot of free time during the at sea days because they were so comfortable on their own.

The food in the dining room was excellent. We ate dinner there every night and really enjoyed it. We were not as fond of the Windjammer but it was fine. The breakfast in the main dining room was very good.

All the servers were good. They were excellent at remembering names and drink preferences. Very surprised at how attentive they were.

We thought the cruise was very well organized. Overall it was one of the best family vacations we have taken. Our kids chose it over a trip to Disney/Universal this year. We are going on another Western Caribbean cruise on the Navigator this March. For us it was not so much about the ports as it was the overall experience. We returned much more relaxed than when we left.

We would love it if RCI would sell the total beverage packages here like they do in Europe so you don't have to worry about the bar tab at the end of the trip.

Disembarkation was very smooth also. We were back in our car driving to Mobile by 9:00 at the latest. Very impressed. Again, the airlines could take a lesson from the cruise lines.

I'm sure the RCI has much nicer, newer ships in its fleet but we really enjoyed our cruise on the Voyager and thought the ship was very pretty, clean and well cared for. Less

Cabin review: Voyager of the Seas Large Oceanview Stateroom Deck 6 8514

old TV's, tiny bathroom with not much storage, adequate cabin storage but could use more closet space, quiet location, far from elevator but this makes it quieter

Port and Shore Excursions

Chankanaab National Park Tour

took a taxi from the pier - best day in port. Snorkeled, beach, sea lion show The water was beautiful and the sand was gorgeous. Reasonable entrance fee, beer and food priced cheaply and food was good. We plan on going back in April. No need to book this through the ship as it is so easy to travel in Cozumel.

We took a bus over to a resort for the day. I would recommend that RCI eliminate Jamaica from its itinerary. It is so poor and depressing and you have to drive so far to get anywhere.

Stingray Swim

The stingrays were amazing and we also stopped and snorkeled. The weather was not so great that day. Ran into some storms. Would choose another tour operator next time. I chose it based on Trip Advisor and he had great reviews but I wasn't very impressed. Next time I would just spend the day at a beach/resort and enjoy the beautiful scenery and water. The weather is too undependable to spend $200+ and risk a thunderstorm cutting the day short.
