Thomson Dream Christmas & New Year Cruise

Sail Date: December 2012
Destination: Southern Caribbean
Embarkation: Barbados

We have never cruised before but have both returned from what was the best holiday we have ever had and are now huge fans of cruising.

Anyway the Dream was fantastic.

We found absolutely all the staff to be friendly and helpful, they could not do enough for you and that alone made the trip a delight. From the waiters and the bar staff to the cabin Steward Gunawan who deserves a special mention for his friendliness and his towel art, they were all great.

The entertainment was top class and the talent/skills of the entertainment team in the Broadway show lounge are easily as good as those I have experienced in top West End shows. The fact that they do a new routine every night to such high standards is a credit to them. The other entertainment around the ship is also excellent. The group performing in the Medusa Bar - Top Men - were fantastic as were Elegant Touch in the Ocean Bar.

Ship - It is not a new ship but it is kept spotlessly clean and also did More an excellent job of keeping the norovirus at bay. Staff were dedicated to providing disinfectant gel as you boarded the ship at each port as well as there being dispensing machines around the restaurants on the ship and they did an excellent job although there were the moaning minnies who felt it was too much - they would have been the same people who would no doubt have complained the loudest if they had become unwell!

Not all lifts go to all floors on the dream which apparently proved an annoyance to some people. Again this something that you quickly find out and learn to get around it without a problem it just meant sometimes turning right when coming out of your cabin and using the lift that way rather than turning left and using the lift on that side. Once you know where you want to go it is not an issue. Generally speaking getting a lift was never a problem unless you were amongst the throng coming out of the Show Lounge when sheer numbers made it difficult. Sometimes people going down just one deck should try walking....

Facilities on the ship are excellent. From the card room to the library to the internet lounge etc they all look good and are well equipped and sometimes a wonderful escape if you want a quiet moment.

Excursions - we went on quite a few. We would do it differently next time but not because they were not good. Simply because we now realise how easy it is to get around yourself and as I like taking pictures can please myself where I go or stop to take them. It is more difficult when you are on a coach. Having said that the guides on all were very extremely knowledgable and friendly.

Food - was excellent. Not necessarily piping hot but certainly never need to complain when in the Orion waiter served dining room and certainly not an issue in the other restaurants. A good choice was always available and we ate in the Orion for our evening meal most nights. Waiters were always attentive and topped up the glasses with water or wine. MY one tiny complaint would be the water which was always warm - however, they always brought ice to cool it when you asked. For the sake of not wasting staff time though it would be much better if they provided jugs of chilled water to pour yourself as this would save the staff much time and effort. As I said though a very minor point.

Overall the best holiday ever and I thank Thomson and Captain Dearman and all the staff on the Thomson Dream for making it so. Less

Cabin review: Thomson Dream 7086

Reasonably spacious cabin given the amount of time spent there. Was quiet quiet overall (some background noise) but to be honest I expected that. However, no engine noise bad vibration etc. The cabin has some minor damage where previous cruisers have been a little careless but again a minor point and the cabin was kept spotlessly clean.
