NCL Gem, Eastern Carribbean out of NYC

Sail Date: December 2012
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
Embarkation: New York (Manhattan)

Checking-In was a breeze. Always be there as early as possible. Rooms were ready ahead of time and was easy to find our room, mid-ship and 4th floor. PLenty of activities to keep you busy. We are active people so their gym, facilities, and sports activities were great. We played dodgeball multiple times throughout. Rock climbing was good.

The food was great overall but they struggled on the simple things such as Mac and CHeese and Broccoli soup... too watery. But aside from the little things, great food. Service was great most of the time. The service at the Blue Lagoon in the middle of the night was sub-par. No all-night buffets was a minus and their 24/7 pizza service included a $5 charge. This was no good considering our Carnival cruise included an all-night fresh pizza station to visit at will. We complained to the rest manager, Kaya, and he sent us wine and choclates complimentary... awesome!

On-board entertainment was full of variety. Singing, dancing, Cirque More du Solei, Comedy acts, magic. You will be kept busy throughout this cruise if you want to be. All on-board bands and entertainers such as piano and guitar players were phenominal. PLenty of gambling happenings as well such as Deal or No deal (real live game), bingo and raffles to win a cruise! I won an Ipad and $500 on a machine in the casino. So it is possible to win those things! Casino was good as well. Lots of kid's activities as well, they will stay busy. They have Nickelodeon contracts so they have characters and such. You will have a good time on this cruise although don't expect many towel animals :( . Ship was well kept.

Disembarkation was fine for us although some people were upset about disembark ops. I recommend. Worth the money we spent. Less than $2000 Less

Big enough for two average people although I am 6'3. Small porthole to save money on room cost. Room service was satisfactory. No complaints.

Port and Shore Excursions

Beach Break

(5.5)
We ported at Samana, Dom Rep. Read bad reviews about Samana itself and took the recommended excursion, a boat ride to Cayo Levantado, a private island off the coast with a beautiful beach and clear water. We rented snorkel equip and canoes for 2 people for only $35. PLayed volleyball and had good cheap food and drinks. Best part of our trip. Walk past the small shops because the natives are pesty. Great island trip. Book with cruise line on board, it's only $15 each. Cheaper than website.

Nice port, no beach. Just walked around "Old" San Juan. Beautiful area right out of a Bond flick. Visit forts, shops and senor frogs. You are only there for 5 hours but if you are not expecting much, it is nice to just walk around. I did not try an excursion so you might want to try one.

Excellent location to stop at. We walked to the beach from the ship 15 mins. Go towards shops and you will run into the beach. Natives will bother you but were nice about refusing service. Nice beach and nice water. Did not try food or beverages although I saw plenty of places to eat and drink.

I suggest an excursion of some sort for this port. We tried to get a cab to a different part of the island that wasn't where everyone else was going like Megans beach but no one would take us to the secluded places. It was nice there but we didn't do anything fantastic.
