Jewel is a Jewel for RCI

Sail Date: December 2012
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: Tampa

PROS: Embarkation in Tampa is always easy. We did valet parking, handed over our bags to a porter and proceeded to check-in. Security went fairly fast and then to the Crown & Anchor/Platinum, again fast. Pictures were taken after we were on the ship and before we went inside.

Made our way to the 11th deck and to the Solarium where we met our friends. Went to the Windjammer for a quick bite. A very good selection of food and layout was not bad for a buffet. There will always be people who have no idea where they are and stand in everyone's way, but other than that little snag, all went well.

We had My Time Dining and reserved 6:30 for the entire cruise. Our waiter and assistant waiter was Nazareth and Neptali (?not real sure of spelling) at Table 584. They were great, very fast and efficient service. The food was excellent. Kudos to the kitchen!

As we have been on a few cruises, we did not go to any shows, but heard great reviews from fellow More passengers.

We visited Key West and as usual it was very interesting. We then went to Cozumel. We had been there many times before and the gentlemen decided to stay on board. We just went to the shops (we docked in downtown) and spent very little money but had a nice outing. Rain was coming in so we decided to play it safe and return to the ship. Glad we did as a storm hit not too long afterwards.

Our room was a Superior Balcony and our attendant was Perceval(?again not sure of spelling). Our room was 9552. He was very efficient and pleasant. Our room was always made up by the time we returned from breakfast. However, the only

CON: Was the fact that when we went on to the balcony, for the first few moments it was great, but then the doors on both sides opened up and we heard the dreaded click of cigarette lighters and smoke engulfed us. Wish RCI could do something about this. Ask if passengers are smokers then put them in designated areas of the ship so non-smokers can enjoy the balconies that they paid extra for. Smokers' rights stop when they infringe on my right to breathe fairly clean air.

Debarkation went smoothly. We chose to have our bags picked up the night before and then waited in the theater for our "number" to be called. Bags were ready and easily found, then to customs and out.

All in all, this was a very nice cruise except for the smoke. We will be sailing again with RCI in April on the Allure. Really looking forward to that. Hopefully, no smoke at that time. Less

Cabin review: Jewel of the Seas 9552

9552 was sufficient, a little tight but it did the job. There was plenty of storage and lighting. Bed was rather soft, but servicable. Good location re noise level. The shower staff was like a rocket. Not sure how "large" people would be able to get in it let alone exit. Roon was very quiet at night.

Port and Shore Excursions

really wish cruises would find another port to replace this, maybe Cuba?

Usual T-shirt shops, bars and very interesting people. Everyone should see Key West (on their bucket list).
