Norwegian Star W. Caribbean

Sail Date: November 2012
Destination: Western Caribbean
Embarkation: New Orleans

We had 4 seniors, a toddler and is parents on board....a small family reunion and celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary. Two couples had cruised once before to Alaska on the Pearl, the other couple had never cruised. We had 2 adjoining midship balcony staterooms and a midship oceanview cabin. The couch made a very large comfortable bed for our toddler.

On our first cruise we used a travel agent...on this one we used NCL.com and found it to be very simple and efficient...I appreciated the updates and communications and instructions from them as the months went by.I won't hesitate to make arrangements with them again because of that.

The Carribean cruise was a very different experience than the Alaskan cruise so it's hard to compare, maybe an unfair comparison, because the Alaskan cruise is so spectacular and seems to be everybody's favorite. But this trip was good - the staff was all very efficient and friendly and made us feel very comfortable even tho we were More like 'fish out of water' because we had never been out of the country or to beach areas before. The other older couple (who had never cruised) have travelled all over the world, however, and grew up on the beach, enjoyed it a lot so I think that's a good recommendation for the trip.

Through experience and recommendation we researched and planned our own excursions with local providers rather than the NCL services. Altho NCL had been very efficient on the Alaskan cruise excurions, we were able to save a lot of money by going with local guides (and they all turned out to be very professional and good).

Since we don't go to bars, swim or sunbathe, we had hoped for good entertainment in the theatre but it was very mediocre. The crew's 'talent show' was about the best they had to offer. I'm sure there was good music in some of the clubs, however.

The Star is not quite as polished looking as the Pearl, needs a little decor maitenance but everything was very clean looking. We did have a couple of negative experiences, however....a large panel in our deck 10 cabin fell out of the celing - and I happend to be standing right under it at the time, got a good bang on the head. Maintenance came immediately, however, inquired if I needed medical assistance (which I declined) and repaired the ceiling quickly. The cabin on Deck 4 had a toilet backup but that was also taken care of promptly. Our steward kept our rooms spotless, spoke good English, and was very friendly. The food was not as good as the Pearl but maybe it was the difference in the season or part of the world or maybe the economy. The buffet turned out to be the best choice for food.

A one very positive part of our onboard experience was the children's program. The staff and facilities there were wonderul and made the trip a joy for our 2-yr-old - and for the rest of us, too - we had a little time for rest and quiet meals. Our child had never even been to a daycare so we didn't know how he'd do but the staff won him over in no time and he was eager to go every time. Thanks so much for that and for a well-trained staff - we won't hesitate to take him on a cruise again. Less

Cabin review: Norwegian Star Oceanview Stateroom with Balcony Deck Nine 1070

1068-1070 adjoining cabins. Other than the ceiling falling on my head one afternoon (when I tried to close the door between the adjoining cabins) we were very pleased with our cabins. Felt there was good storage considering the square footage. Love the shower! The linens are wonderful and smooth (do you make them available for sale like some hotels do?), and the mattress was very comfortable. We were pleased that the couch made such a roomy and comfortable bed for our toddler....in fact, it would have been fine for a grown-up.

Port and Shore Excursions

Port is crowded, noisy, not too clean looking, not much of anywhere to eat - the one place we ate didn't even have running water in the bathroom (made us wonder about the kitchen!), shopping was overpriced but there was a lot of it. Took a guided tour thru town (didn't arrange in advance...just a little train at the shop area - overriced)...not much to see. We had been advised not to go outside the tourist area gates alone....glad we didn't...didn't look safe and there was nothing to see anyhow. The most fun was riding the tender back and forth from the ship to the port. There were ferries that went out to the islands and that might have been a good trip but we were told the ferries were not punctual and you'd be risking missing your boat is you went out.

Chacchoben Mayan Ruins

(5)
Private an for our family, very nice vehicle, had both a driver and a narrator. Narrator spoke good English, had a Master's Degree in Mayan Culture, was very friendly...a different guide led our group, along with another small family thru the ruins - he, too, was well-educated and did a wonderful job teaching us about the history of the area. There is a small tourist area at the ruins with bathrooms, snacks for people who can't climb the ruins (altho they are not terribly physically demanding they aren't not for children or elderly). The highlight of our excursion, however, was our "Mayan Experience" - our guide took us to have lunch with a local Mayan lady in her native home, a thatched roof place in her beautiful lush garden. She let us help her cook lunch in her outdoor kitchen - it was the best food we had on the entire trip! I highly recommend that outing for people who have an interest in the culture of the Mayans.

Sightseeing

Driver met us a arranged, spoke good English, very personable, good vehicle, baby seat...first visit so we just wanted to go sightseeing over the island. He did a good job at a very reasonable rate.

Our favorite port. Port was easy to get into, lots to see on the island, lots of places to eat, good food, friendly people. Felt very safe. Would like to have had more time there....made us want to go back stay for a week or so. We used a local guide service, private van for our family - good day, saw lots, learned a lot, felt very safe.
