Our first cruise with Holland America. We found the embarking & disembarking the ship very organised and were surprised to have an upgrade to a ocean view cabin but then everyone we spoke to also had an upgrade! Then the trouble started, first of all our cabin hadn't been cleaned! Then the wrong luggage was delivered. Being organised I prebooked tours and drink packages and they never arrived and we had to ring and follow up several times. I had also order wine as we sailed off which was 5.00pm and told that the wine should arrive by 6.00pm!!! It arrived at 5.55pm not chilled and no wine glasses and just passed through the door! We prepaid a photo for our 30th wedding anniversary and my 50th birthday and they didn't even have us on the paid list and we had to chase up a receipt to prove that we had paid. We enjoy the freestyle dining but like other passengers we can't seem to work out how it worked considering you still had to book and could only get 5.30 or 8.30 times, our first night in the restaurant took 3 & a 1/2 hours! The theater is only small and most nights only 1 show, so you either ate in the restaurant or went to the show and even then the shows weren't great. The ship is lovely, food good but needs better customer service. We found the dutch people friendly and tried to speak english to us. When booking a table for dinner we asked for english speaking guests to share our table. We did 3 tours with one cancelled due to bad weather and we had to follow up for a refund. We would sail with them again but not our first choice! Geirganger: Very small town, probably wouldn't get off the ship unless doing a tour. Alesund: A lovely town and would have like to have spent more time here. We did the Islands of Gisk & Godoy which was good considering we had bad weather and it was a good way to see more of Norway. Eidfjord: Small alpine town, we did the waterfalls and waffles tour. It was a great tour, very informative and we were lucky to see snow.

Cabin review: Large Ocean-View Stateroom

Good size cabin with ocean view. Good size bathroom with a small bath. Only problem we found was as we had gail force winds the waves crashed right by our heads and had to sleep the other end of the bed!!

Port and Shore Excursions

Lovely town, we did it on our own and it is a easy walk into the centre of town. We took the finicula up the mountain for views of the city. Then walked down the mall, went to the fish market on the wharf and walked through town to see a lovely fountain. Unfortunately it was raining so we then headed back though a fort back to the ship for a late lunch. Would have spent more time in town if the weather was better.
