It was our first time with Costa. We are italian, but we always cruised with American cruise lines. This time Costa had a good itinerary and the price was Ok, so we decided to try. What a mistake! The main delusional points are: food, service and entertainment. The food was average, both in buffet and at the restaurant (but mainly at the restaurant, one night they presented us a chicken plate which was still raw in the inside), the service slow and quite poor (at the restaurant we had one waiter only and it took 30 minutes to have a bottle of water) and while we were seated at the several tables around the ship we were not able to order something to drink because unless you are in front of the bar, no waiter comes pick your order. At the main restaurant the food is always and only italian style (while on other cruise lines there is a wide choice with a theme for each night)and for the evening, there is only the main restaurant or the pizzeria available, no buffet is open at dinner More
time. In general we found the food & beverage offer on this ship to be very poor compared to Princess and Carnival, where we always were very happy and satisfied. Entertaiment is really average, some of the shows were nice, but the singers around the ship seemed quite "standard" compared to our previous experiences. For the second seating the evening show is before dinner, which is quite strange since you end up with nothing to do after dinner and most of the time on excursion days you cannot make it to attend. The staff is for the most part not really friendly and smiling, they do their job without not so much care on the clients. There were obviously a few exceptions, but the general impression is not positive.
Our stateroom was Ok, but quite noisy at night time with a lot of "cracking" noises (especially if the sea was a bit rough). Stateroom steward was OK.
During days at sea it was almost impossible to find free sun chair after 9 a.m. (there were a lot of italians, which love to sunbathe!) and this was quite a disappointment because there were not enough chairs for everyone. In conclusions, I would not recommend this ship, it does not offer the relaxing experience we had in our past 5 cruises with other cruise lines. The itinerary was: Bahamas, Gran Cayman, Jamaica, Roatan, Belize and Cozumel and it was OK, we enjoyed all ports. Less
Costa Mediterranea Cruises to the Western Caribbean
We took the public boat to Caye Caulker, it is a 50 minutes trip to a wonderful place in the middle of the sea! Belize does not offer beaches, so be aware that there is a lot of snorkeling to do, nice food, wonderful nature, but not white long beaches! We enjoyed our excursion quite a lot, anyway!
We went to Tulum ruins and then Xel-Ha water park. It was fun!! Our guide was super professional and nice, she explained a lot about the culture and history of the places, really gave us a wonderful explanation. Xel Ha is basically an "aquarium" where it is possible to swim with the fishes and do a lot of activities. The food is super good and all included!! We recommend it!
The excursion was in the afternoon (we docked at 2 p.m.) and we reached the beach when the sun was already down. We enojoyed the falls although it was quite a "strong" experience, but we recommend to do this excursion only if you have all day and not only one afternoon!
We took a taxi at the port and reached West Bay beach indipendently, it is a nice beach, but be aware that there are a lot of people at the beach offering all kind of services, they might be a bit annoying. Roatan is quite a poor place, driving from the port and passing through the "main town" it can be quite touching to see how most of the people live. Our ship offered an excursion to "Tabyana beach" which is a part of West Bay, but I would recommend to take a taxi and stop in a less crowded area of the beach (if you are looking for a relaxing experience, if you are looking for fun, then Tabyana is OK!)
