Celebrity Silhouette-beautiful ship

Sail Date: October 2012
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Venice

my wife and i cruised on the october 23rd sailing of the celebrity silhouette, embarked in venice,(overnight). We visited ravenna, split, dubrovnik, kotor, valetta, catania, naples (overnight) and rome.

the ship is beautiful, bright, airy and the satff are very friendly. the intinerrary is excellent, all the stops are interesting, most of the ports you can get downtown easily (the exceptions being ravenna and dubrovnik where you need to take the shuttles offered by celebrity) we took the transfer in venice offered by celebrity, it was fairly priced and the best way to get to the ship.
we spent a day walking around naples. we did not encounter or see any safety issues with walking the main areas during the day.

i have sailed 8 times on royal caribbean and thisis my first cruise on celebrity. i feel celebrity is probably one step up from royal caribbbean based on the food options in the main dining room which are excellent. the everyday options for dinner include More french onion soup, shrimp cocktail, chocolate cake, cheesecake. The steaks offered including fillet mignon, ribeye, tbone and sirlon were all excellent.

the disembarkation in rome is seamless. you can really pick the time to get off and you go to the waiting area and you are called right away. you just pick up your luggage and your out, takes maybe 10 minutes. you should prearrange a transfer to the airport or to rome either with celebrity or privately. you cannot walk to the train,it is not close, especially with luggage.

there are 2 areas of improvement needed on this ship. while the buffet is very good and they do have food and ice cream 24hours, the coffee in the buffet is generally too weak. we notified the staff there and they did try to fix it one day, but its hard to get a strong cup of coffee there. there is better coffee on the 7th floor or in the dining room.

the second area of improvement is the entertainment. there are 3 production shows, the first one is good, it is a broadway show. the second one features the dancing which is good, but the first half of it has weak accompanying music.the third show is a circus soleil type show, if you like this type of show, its ok, otherwise, your in trouble. its a waste of the singers talent to have to provide droning nonsensical background music for it. there were no shows on the overnight ports which i dont understand why. Cabin review: Celebrity Silhouette Deluxe Oceanview Stateroom with Veranda Sunrise Deck (7) 7303

i thought the cabin was a little on the small side, not including the balcony, it seemed a little narrow. we were in a veranda , #7303 towards the back. didn't use balcony that much, cool at night and not on ship during the day. we liked the nightlight in the bathroom and the lotion provided., bed is comfortable

Port and Shore Excursions

both split and dubrovnik are walkable, split from the ship, dubrovnik by taking a ship shuttle, buy ship shuttles onboard prior to stop. both have walls, dubrovniks you can walk, its about a mile, slippery when wet but worth doing. it has great views. both ports have areas to walk thru, nice ports

nice stop, modern, walk from ship to tourist area, good shopping, internet and long distance calling on a side street, historic buildings as well.

Mdina Walking Tour

booked a walking tour thru celebrity of mdina. it was a nice tour seeing historic city of mdina, valletta was nice to walk thru as well, tour included this. for the price, it was good value

Amalfi Coast

the first day, we did a private tour with romeinlimo(see tripadvisor) very good tour, all day, drivers very nice, flexible, took us to sorrento, positano and then a vineyard. amalfi coast is beautiful, tour was half the price of the ships, we had 3 vans, 24 people second day, we just walked thru naples, no problem with safety, nice sites, walked the main shopping street to the archaeological museum, about a 30 minute walk from ship

we used shareashoreexcursion in italy for a group transfer to central rome where the driver dropped us off at each of our hotels. used cruisecritic messageboards to form the group, otherwise it is pricey to get from the port to rome or the airport because it is not close. spent the day in rome seeing the major sites, we stayed near the spanish steps at the principessa isabella , part of the clarion hotel chain, nice place to stay, good location

City Tour

(5)
we actually docked in catania south of taormina. we had a private tour to siracusa which was excellent but it poured that day so we had to curtail it. did not go to downtown catania. many people went to taormina so see mt etna but it was covered by clouds because of the rain. need to go back in good weather but many excursions can be taken from these ports. the tour company was very good and i would recommend them, they procured the local guide who was excellent as well

venice was very nice, very walkable, take the peoplemover (monorail) to get to the nearest plaza. you need euros (dollars), press the screen to start the ticket process. take the number 1 vaporetto to get to st marks . ravenna was the next port, take the ship shuttle downtown, then you can walk to all the sights in town.
