my wife and i cruised on the october 23rd sailing of the celebrity silhouette, embarked in venice,(overnight). We visited ravenna, split, dubrovnik, kotor, valetta, catania, naples (overnight) and rome.
the ship is beautiful, bright, airy and the satff are very friendly. the intinerrary is excellent, all the stops are interesting, most of the ports you can get downtown easily (the exceptions being ravenna and dubrovnik where you need to take the shuttles offered by celebrity) we took the transfer in venice offered by celebrity, it was fairly priced and the best way to get to the ship.
we spent a day walking around naples. we did not encounter or see any safety issues with walking the main areas during the day.
i have sailed 8 times on royal caribbean and thisis my first cruise on celebrity. i feel celebrity is probably one step up from royal caribbbean based on the food options in the main dining room which are excellent. the everyday options for dinner include french onion soup, shrimp cocktail, chocolate cake, cheesecake. The steaks offered including fillet mignon, ribeye, tbone and sirlon were all excellent.
the disembarkation in rome is seamless. you can really pick the time to get off and you go to the waiting area and you are called right away. you just pick up your luggage and your out, takes maybe 10 minutes. you should prearrange a transfer to the airport or to rome either with celebrity or privately. you cannot walk to the train,it is not close, especially with luggage.
there are 2 areas of improvement needed on this ship. while the buffet is very good and they do have food and ice cream 24hours, the coffee in the buffet is generally too weak. we notified the staff there and they did try to fix it one day, but its hard to get a strong cup of coffee there. there is better coffee on the 7th floor or in the dining room.
the second area of improvement is the entertainment. there are 3 production shows, the first one is good, it is a broadway show. the second one features the dancing which is good, but the first half of it has weak accompanying music.the third show is a circus soleil type show, if you like this type of show, its ok, otherwise, your in trouble. its a waste of the singers talent to have to provide droning nonsensical background music for it. there were no shows on the overnight ports which i dont understand why.
