Carnival Pride - Escaping Hurrican Sandy!
Destination: Eastern Caribbean
It was a leisurely car ride of 4 1/4 hrs to Baltimore from Pittsburgh to board the Carnival Pride bound for the Caribbean. The embarkation went smoothly, and we went to get a nice lunch on board before sailing. The stateroom was very nice and well maintained. The shower was a little larger than past ships we've been on, which made showering a lot easier. We had a great balcony view just behind and lower than the ship's bridge. It was so interesting to see the pilot and the captain watching out their side windows, carefully making sure our exit from port was uneventful.
We loved the animals made out of towels, especially the monkey hanging from the ceiling! The steward, Buddy, was so congenial and smiling all the time. He just had a baby girl 2 weeks prior to the voyage, and could hardly wait to get home to Indonesia to see her! He and his staff kept the room clean and well ordered throughout the cruise.
The dining was phenomenal! Our chief waiter, Almund, More and his staff took absolute care of us, knew us by name, and went overboard (excuse the pun!) to meet our every need. They even sang and danced for us! It was so interesting tasting foods that your not used to. and everything was beautifully presented and delicious. (Thanks for the extra lobster tail, Almund!) I loved the shrimp cocktail at each meal.
Evening entertainment was suburb with first class music and dance. How talented these young people were with professional lighting and sound from the technical crew and stage hands. Great job!
Due to Hurricane Sandy, we were only able to visit one island (Grand Turk) for 6 hours. We enjoyed the tour of the island, and sitting on the beach with the beautiful Pride in the background. We were unable to visit the other two islands we were scheduled for, and even unable to dock at Port Canaveral due to the unsafe condition. The captain's first priority was for the guests and the crew, so he charted our course back to Baltimore, arriving 12 hours early so people could get in their cars and go home before the storm hit. It was a little awkward having to get off the ship at 9 PM, going through customs, then getting back on ship at 11:30 PM, since it was too late to drive back to Pittsburgh that late. But, we had a good sleep and a great breakfast, before officially disembarking to start our trip home the next morning.
It was interesting to see at least 100-125 tree trucks heading east on the PA turnpike to help in the hurricane stricken areas.
Six days at sea and 6 hours on one island was the summation of our cruise, cut short by Hurricane Sandy. However, the staff did everything they could to make it a fun cruise despite the 60 mph. winds and high waves that made Dramamine, ginger ale, and green apples the preferred diet of a lot of folks!
One significant negative, though, was the pornography ("art") that was prolific throughout the ship, even in the elevators! Huge murals of naked women in the hallways and naked men and women statues...and this is supposed to be a family friendly, kid friendly ship, the Carnival Pride??? Though I really enjoyed the ship and the staff, I will NEVER take the Pride again unless they remove the pornography. Why would I want to bring my kids and grandchildren on a ship with this kind of decor??? I feel sorry for the parents and the children who took the Pride, for those images will be in their minds the rest of their lives! They termed one of their shows as "PG" because of the skimpy costumes, yet they have "R" rated pornography throughout the ship!? Come on!! Whose deviant idea was it to put this in plain view of children?? They need to remove it immediately and permanently! Again, the staff and crew were wonderful, but I was so sorry that the Carnival management used such poor discernment and taste in making their decision about this decor. I hope they take my comments, which I sent to them as well, seriously. Less
