Great 60th birthday celebration!

Sail Date: October 2012
Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean
Embarkation: Barcelona

We were 2 couples with 3 of us celebrating our 60th birthdays this year. We had sailed on Celebrity Silhouette last year on a Western Mediterranean and so decided to celebrate by doing an Eastern one on the Solstice this year. We were not disappointed although we thought the Silhouette was a little nicer. We did like the added attraction on this ship of the hot glass blowing and attended about 5 of their shows. We liked the life's lessons shared by the captain each day and enjoyed Alejandro as the cruise director. The food was good, the entertainment okay, but the itinerary of ports was excellent. With the help of Cruise Critic members and other sources, advanced planning really paid off. Here are some highlights of what we did:
BARCELONA - spent 3 days pre-cruise at Marina View B&B Great place to stay!
We did the 2 tours offered by Runner Bean Walking Tours which we also highly recommend. We booked our tickets online for Sagrada Familia with a time of 30 minutes More following the end of our Gaudi tour. That worked out well, as the line for tickets was at least a 2 hour wait.
CANNES, FRANCE - rented a car from Hertz and drove to St. Paul de Vence and followed Rick Steve's driving tour through the Gordes area.
LIVORNO, ITALY - rented a car with Sifracar and drove to San Gimignano and over to Volterra. Enjoyed very much the Tuscany area.
ROME - took the train from port into Rome Walked to Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain (tossed in our coins) and Pantheon with stops for gelato (try Giolitti's and Grom). Booked ahead tickets for Le Domus Romane which is an excellent exhibit--one of the top attractions on Trip Advisor
NAPLES - took the hydrofoil to Capri, and then rode in the open air taxi up to Anacapri where we walked around and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and weather.KOTOR,MONTENEGRO - hired Milo, the taxi driver recommended on Cruise Critic who met us at the port and took us on a 4 hour drive around Montenegro--very scenic
VENICE - took the vaporetto to Burano, ate gelato at Grom's, and did the 2 hour Row Venice excursion with Jane which was one of the highlights of our cruise. Absolutely loved the sail in and out at this port!
DUBROVNIK - took a 2 hour taxi panorama tour which included a drive to Cavtet. Ate lunch at the Komarda restaurant and walked the wall. Another wonderful day as they all were! Less
